Director, Payments – Risk Operations

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the entire lifecycle: onboarding, pricing, underwriting, monitoring, disputes, and support.

• Establish and operate based on key metrics: approval rates, loss rates, false positives, and time-to-decision.

• Create a highly instrumented, scalable system featuring clear feedback loops — which includes monitoring decision quality and identifying failure modes — to foster continuous improvement.

• Transform the payments operations stack into an AI-native framework, where human intervention is focused on managing exceptions rather than handling volume.

• Develop and implement agent-based workflows, LLM-assisted investigation tools, and large-scale real-time decision-making capabilities.

• Consistently elevate the standards for AI-driven operations within a PayFac context.

• Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to launch internal AI tools that enhance over time, along with select external vendors.

• Manage portfolio-level losses while balancing growth, protection, and customer experience.

• Carefully refine Boulevard's risk appetite and control frameworks in collaboration with the GM Fintech.

• Design and enhance underwriting and monitoring strategies, proactively identifying and mitigating emerging risks.

• Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, card network rules, and PayFac requirements.

• Work alongside Legal and Compliance to uphold robust control frameworks, audits, and reporting processes.

• Cultivate relationships with acquirers, processors, and banking partners; represent Boulevard with credibility in external risk discussions.

• Act as the central accountability point for Payments Operations across Product, Engineering, CX, Sales, and Finance.

• Convert operational insights into product and policy enhancements.

• Lead a high-performing team in underwriting, risk, and compliance operations — transitioning from manual processing to system oversight and exception management.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in operations, including a minimum of 7 years in payments, fintech, and/or risk; significant PayFac experience is highly desirable.

• Proven success in developing AI-native decisioning systems — including agent workflows, rules engines, and ML-assisted methods — that have enhanced outcomes.

• Extensive knowledge in payments, acquiring, and/or risk underwriting, with a focus on fraud, chargebacks, and transaction monitoring.

• Demonstrated history of managing portfolio-level performance with clear accountability for loss rates, approval rates, and operational efficiency.

• Established capability to drive operational evolution — transitioning teams from manual processes to system oversight.

• Senior-level experience in engaging with external partners (acquirers, processors) and fostering cross-functional collaborations across Product, Engineering, Legal, and Compliance.
