Director of Design

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead, mentor, and provide support to a team of 2 or more designers through constructive feedback, career development, and hands-on coaching.

• Set standards for design quality, craftsmanship, and collaboration throughout the organization.

• Conduct design critiques while fostering a constructive, inclusive, and growth-oriented feedback culture.

• Recruit and onboard additional design talent as the team expands.

• Design and implement a scalable design system that includes component libraries, design tokens, interaction patterns, and thorough documentation.

• Develop and uphold design best practices, accessibility standards, and brand guidelines.

• Create and sustain design documentation.

• Act as the internal Figma expert, establishing libraries, file organization, naming conventions, and component governance.

• Educate designers and cross-functional partners on advanced functionalities within Figma.

• Assess updates and new features on the Figma platform.

• Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams from the discovery phase to delivery.

• Influence roadmap decisions by applying design thinking and user-centered insights.

• Facilitate design reviews and ensure stakeholders align on design direction, rationale, and trade-offs.

• Evaluate and promote AI-driven design tools and workflows.

• Experiment with AI tools and formulate responsible-use guidelines.

• Position the design team as an early adopter and internal advocate for AI-assisted workflows.

• Perform other assigned tasks as needed.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of experience in product design.

• A minimum of 2 years in a design leadership or senior individual contributor role within a product-focused technology organization.

• In-depth expertise in Figma, including component architecture, variables/tokens, auto layout, and prototyping.

• Proven experience in building or significantly advancing a design system from inception.

• Strong portfolio showcasing end-to-end product design work and systems-level thinking.

• Exceptional communication and facilitation abilities.

• Demonstrated capability to mentor and develop designers across various experience levels.

• Solid understanding of front-end development principles and design-to-engineering execution.

• Experience in a rapidly growing startup or scaling design function is preferred.

• Familiarity with AI-powered design tools is preferred.

• Experience with user research methodologies is preferred.

• Background in collaborating with product managers and engineers in an Agile or continuous delivery environment is preferred.

• A proven history of advocating for and enhancing accessibility is preferred.
