Director of AI Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design and implement production AI/ML systems — you will be coding, not merely reviewing.

• Take ownership of the AI roadmap from start to finish: managing prioritization, trade-offs, and delivery.

• Establish technical standards for model quality, evaluations, observability, and reliability.

• Promote the use of agentic coding tools to enhance team productivity.

• Collaborate with Platform Engineering on infrastructure, data pipelines, and APIs.

• Lead a distributed team of 8–10 engineers specializing in Data and ML disciplines.

• Recruit, develop, and retain engineers at various levels; foster a high-trust remote culture.

• Work alongside Product teams on roadmap sequencing and scope trade-offs.

• Clearly convey AI capabilities and limitations to non-technical stakeholders.

• Manage model performance metrics and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience with production agentic pipelines utilizing frontier models.

• Proficiency in Anthropic SDK, OpenAI SDK, tool usage, function calling, and multi-agent orchestration.

• Expertise in reliable agent loop design — including planning, memory, tool execution, and error recovery.

• Knowledge of RAG pipeline design — chunking, embedding models, retrieval tuning, and reranking.

• Ability to build evaluation frameworks from the ground up — ensuring correctness, regression, and semantic similarity.

• Skills in observability for production AI — including tracing, cost tracking, latency, and failure analysis.

• Experience fine-tuning frontier or open-source models for specific domain tasks.

• Familiarity with LoRA, QLoRA, and instruction tuning — beyond standard API calls.

• Proficiency in training data collection, curation, cleaning, and labeling at scale.

• Optimization of LLM inference and serving.

• Hands-on experience with Python — comfortable writing, reviewing, and deploying production code.

• Knowledge of PostgreSQL — including schema design, query optimization, and indexing strategies.

• Understanding of distributed systems — including async workers, queues, retries, and state machines.

• Experience in designing public-facing APIs — REST, versioning, and enhancing developer experience.

• Familiarity with AWS or cloud infrastructure — sufficient to manage AI workload deployments.
