This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +6 more states.
• Formulate and implement state-specific strategies aimed at introducing and influencing legislation, regulations, and policy proposals that safeguard, enable, and promote Sun Life's interests.
• Establish and sustain robust relationships while serving as a liaison to Executive Branch officials, gubernatorial appointees, state legislators, and key staff members within the assigned region.
• Evaluate proposed and enacted legislation, regulations, and sub-regulatory guidance to assess operational and financial impacts by collaborating with internal subject matter experts.
• Identify, synthesize, and report on the high-level political landscape and its implications for on-the-ground relationships, opportunities, and challenges to enhance the overall strategy of the government relations department.
• Foster relationships with relevant state trade associations, business leaders, and other external stakeholders to promote Sun Life's priorities and bolster connections with elected officials and appointed regulatory leaders.
• Oversee state contract lobbyists or other external contractors within the region.
• Understand, comply with, and educate other internal stakeholders on state lobbying and ethics regulations.
• Perform additional duties as necessary or required.
• BA/BS degree in political science, public policy, or a related field is required.
• A master's or other advanced degree is preferred.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in lobbying and/or relevant roles.
• Experience in highly regulated industries is essential.
• Comprehensive understanding of state political landscapes and their impact on business priorities.
• Capability to balance enterprise-wide perspectives with day-to-day strategic execution in government relations.
• Proven experience collaborating with legislative staff and/or leadership of governmental regulatory agencies across multiple states.
• Strong aptitude for synthesizing and conveying complex policies to non-policy audiences, both verbally and in written formats.
• Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, planning, and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, assess project urgency effectively, utilize goals to steer actions, and develop detailed action plans while organizing and scheduling personnel and tasks.
