Director, Data Science

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +7 more states.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the data science and applied AI strategy for operations, focusing on agentic systems, forecasting, lead scoring, customer voice aggregation, and decision-support systems that enhance throughput, reliability, and unit economics.

• Develop agents and AI workflows that not only predict but also take action.

• Manage the data science and AI aspects of post-sales product experiences, which include support agents, onboarding intelligence, and customer success automation—from design to production deployment, evaluation, and quality oversight.

• Lead, recruit, and nurture a data science team that focuses on operational and product-related projects; establish benchmarks for technical excellence, evaluation, and quality of production.

• Collaborate with operations, finance, and product leadership to pinpoint high-impact issues, define them, and translate them into operational strategies and implemented AI functionalities.

• Oversee the entire lifecycle from problem identification through to deployment and monitoring, ensuring that systems perform reliably in production—whether it's for internal forecasting, autonomous workflows, or live customer interactions.

• Develop metrics and evaluation frameworks that link this work to operational, financial, and customer outcomes (e.g., deflection, resolution quality, time-to-value, retention), including thorough assessment of non-deterministic AI systems.

• Work alongside data engineering, machine learning engineering, platform, and product teams to enhance the infrastructure, data quality, orchestration, tooling, and safeguards that these systems rely upon.

• Present findings and recommendations to executive stakeholders, balancing technical detail with business relevance.

• Advocate for an AI/agent-first approach within the team—acting as a hands-on technical leader (e.g., Claude Code) while also creating agentic systems that enhance team efficiency.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in data science or applied AI/ML, including more than 5 years in leadership roles focused on team development.

• Proven history of deploying systems that produce measurable results—impacting both internal operational decisions and customer-facing AI functionalities.

• Strong foundation in statistics and machine learning, with expertise in modern AI technologies: LLMs, agentic systems, orchestration (e.g., tool use, MCP), retrieval, and the necessary evaluation practices.

• Experience in building or managing production AI systems—agents, conversational systems, or autonomous workflows—and implementing the evaluation, monitoring, and safety protocols they require.

• Proficiency in SQL and Python; knowledge of modern data and AI infrastructures (cloud warehouses, dbt, LLM/agent deployment pipelines).

• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with non-technical executives and translate unclear business challenges into actionable tasks.

• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, data-rich setting where decisions have significant operational, financial, and customer experience implications.
