This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in South Africa.
• Assist in the administration and monitoring of AWS PostgreSQL databases while adopting best practices for reliability and performance.
• Collaborate with senior engineers to identify performance issues and explore tuning opportunities.
• Engage daily with development teams and other departments, as effective communication is crucial in this role.
• Evaluate developer-driven changes to data architecture and provide constructive feedback under the mentorship of senior team members.
• Investigate query performance challenges and enhance your expertise in database optimization.
• Participate in release and deployment processes to gain practical experience with production workflows.
• Contribute to internal enhancements such as automating manual tasks, accelerating data delivery, and facilitating infrastructure expansion.
• Employ AI agents, LLM-powered tools, and automation to efficiently manage routine tasks like query analysis, schema reviews, documentation, and troubleshooting.
• Ensure the smooth operation of RDS systems on a daily basis.
• Assist in evaluating and improving data schemas for efficiency by reviewing indices, identifying redundant columns, and assessing table structures.
• Maintain a curious mindset, explore new technologies, propose AI-driven solutions, and present ideas to enhance the productivity of our systems and team.
• A minimum of 1 year of experience in a data/database engineer or DBA position.
• At least 3 years of experience working with databases and data architectures in any IT role.
• Practical experience with AWS RDS or Aurora.
• Proven application of AI agents or LLM-powered tools to perform technical tasks more effectively.
• A robust foundation in relational databases and data architecture gained through professional experience, academic projects, internships, or personal exploration.
• Experience or substantial academic background in designing, building, and scaling databases.
• Familiarity with SQL and a keen interest in deepening knowledge of PostgreSQL and cloud database services.
• Comfort with using AI assistants, copilots, and LLM-powered tools as integral to your workflow, rather than as occasional novelties.
