This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Italy.
• Lead and develop our Data Engineering team (1–2 engineers) — responsible for delivery, quality, and career progression.
• Oversee and enhance WeRoad's data architecture: the structured BigQuery warehouse (raw → marts → serving), the dbt transformation layer, and the semantic layer that establishes our metrics.
• Manage the ingestion and orchestration stack — Airflow, dlt, and the transition to serverless CDC — ensuring the reliability, quality, and observability of our data pipelines.
• Handle the self-service BI and reporting toolkit (Tableau, Metabase, and our transition to Lightdash / dashboards-as-code) so stakeholders can trust and navigate their own data.
• Establish and uphold data governance: data quality, lineage, documentation, PII and access controls, and self-service standards.
• Promote AI within the team — AI-assisted engineering and production AI data pipelines — and its integration as a standard practice.
• Collaborate with the Director of Data Engineering & AI, the Data & BI team, Product, and business stakeholders to convert company priorities into a data roadmap.
• 5+ years of experience in data engineering / analytics engineering within fast-growing product companies, including the design and evolution of cloud data warehouses and pipelines (BigQuery / GCP is a significant advantage).
• Proven experience as a manager, guiding and mentoring engineers — you understand when to delegate, when to manage, and when to be hands-on (it's a small, senior team).
• Proficient in SQL and hands-on experience with dbt, modern ELT / ingestion (dlt or similar), and workflow orchestration (Airflow).
• Experience with BI and dashboarding (Tableau, Metabase, Lightdash or similar) and developing a semantic / metrics layer atop the warehouse.
• A history of establishing data governance — quality, lineage, documentation, PII and access management, and self-service.
• Proven application of AI-assisted engineering and AI in data pipelines, promoting its adoption across a team.
• Exceptional communication skills.
• Fluent in English; comfortable in a fast-paced, multi-market, remote-first environment.
• Performance-based bonus – An annual variable bonus, subject to performance and company results.
• A complimentary WeRoad trip each year – Choose your dream destination with a €1,400/year travel discount or travel even more as a Travel Coordinator.
• Trust-based holidays – We believe that performance is driven by impact, not hours at a desk. You are encouraged to take the necessary time to recharge, beyond contractual minimums, within shared guidelines.
• Opportunities for learning – We invest in your development with training and learning opportunities.
• Support for new parents – €3,600/year for 3 years following birth or adoption (or prorated if your child is under 3 when you start at WeRoad).
• Additional benefits – Meal vouchers (€8/day – when applicable), a €1,000 bonus for your wedding or civil union, and a one-time bonus upon reaching 5 years with us.
• Enjoyable work environment – A lively co-working space, team-building activities, and meet-ups.
• Hybrid working model – Flexible working arrangements, with support to work from your chosen destination for up to 1 month per year.
