Counsel, Business Operations and Regulatory

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Massachusetts.

📋 Description

• Act as a trusted advisor for the Cengage Work business, cultivating a deep understanding of its products, business models, and strategic goals.

• Work in conjunction with product, operations, finance, and go-to-market teams to integrate legal and regulatory considerations into business decisions.

• Offer practical, risk-oriented legal counsel that aligns with business aims.

• Provide guidance on federal and state regulatory frameworks that have a direct or indirect effect on Cengage Work.

• Collaborate with Cengage’s government affairs team and external advisors to track, interpret, and advise on legislative and regulatory changes in postsecondary education, workforce education, and skills training that may affect Cengage Work.

• Identify legal, regulatory, and operational risks within Cengage Work and work with compliance, legal experts, and the business to establish policies and procedures to mitigate these risks.

• Draft, review, and negotiate a diverse array of agreements.

⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and active membership in the bar.

• 4–7 years of pertinent legal experience, either in a law firm or in-house.

• Proven experience in closely collaborating with business teams to address complex legal issues in support of strategic goals.

• Strong analytical abilities, issue identification, and problem-solving skills, coupled with a practical, business-focused approach to risk management.

• Eagerness to learn about a new business and the ability to independently acquire expertise in unfamiliar domains.

• Demonstrated capability to take charge of complex legal projects and manage them independently across multiple stakeholders.

• Exceptional skills in drafting, negotiation, and communication.
