
Community Tourism Development Specialist – Africa

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Kenya, +1 more state.
• Oversee the development and integration of Community Tourism Enterprises into the itineraries of travel partners throughout East, West, and Southern Africa.
• Evaluate project opportunities, prepare budgets, manage execution, and deliver training to community partners.
• Assist in the implementation of Planeterra’s Climate & Biodiversity Strategy in Africa.
• Enhance community engagement and benefits through strategic corporate partnerships.
• Nurture existing community partnerships with an emphasis on innovation, capacity building, and sustainable growth.
• Contribute to the Global Community Tourism Network by creating engagement opportunities, leading monthly partner planning and communications, hosting webinars and networking events, and supporting various engagement formats.
• Provide regional impact updates and information to the Communications and Development team.
• Assist with data management and impact monitoring as requested by the Africa and Middle East Regional Manager.
• Act as the primary contact and local representative for community partners.
• Facilitate relationships between Planeterra, travel partners, and community partners.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in the tourism sector, specifically in tourism development and/or related projects.
• Background in tourism product design and/or destination development, particularly with a focus on community tourism.
• At least 2 years of experience in project management.
• Financial management experience is a plus.
• A university degree in tourism, international development, marketing, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Familiarity with the tourism sector in Africa.
• Exceptional communication and intercultural skills when engaging with rural community members.
• Expertise in leading and supporting social enterprises in rural communities.
• Strong understanding of community development and the environmental and social challenges communities face.
• Experience collaborating with destination management representatives, entrepreneurs, and key stakeholders.
• High level of computer literacy.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Suite (Sheets, Docs), database management, project management tools, Slack, online collaboration, and social media platforms.
• Ability to facilitate meetings, training sessions, and other tasks both virtually and remotely.
• Flexibility to work across different time zones and cultures.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in English is required, both spoken and written.
• Outstanding organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
• Highly motivated, proactive, and collaborative.
• Proven track record of successfully delivering projects.
• Capacity to adapt and lead through change management.
• A local or international driver’s license.
