This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• The Director of Community Energy Resilience spearheads the Community Energy Resilience (CER) Initiative, aiming to establish a cleaner, more dependable, and resilient electricity system for California, with an emphasis on advancing clean energy in vulnerable communities that are most affected by air pollution and power outages.
• Key responsibilities encompass fundraising, budgeting, strategic planning, communications, policy recommendations, and collaboration with staff and contractors across the following domains:
• Legislative: Overseeing pertinent legislation under consideration by the California legislature and the US Congress; drafting and advocating for California legislation to promote CER objectives; collaborating with in-house and contract lobbyists as well as partner organizations to ensure initiative priorities navigate through the legislature and receive gubernatorial approval;
• Regulatory: Keeping track of relevant California Public Utility Commission proceedings and California Energy Commission developments and programs, while directing The Climate Center (TCC) involvement in CER-related proceedings, including drafting and submitting comments to the relevant agencies;
• Coalition Building: Establishing and sustaining coalitions of organizations that support Community Resilience and CER legislative and regulatory policy objectives; organizing in-person and virtual meetings as necessary;
• Policy Development: Monitoring industry trends and the activities of relevant coalitions and partners, proposing policies that align with the goals of Climate-Safe California; analyzing policies from key partners; creating factsheets, FAQs, flyers, position papers, and white papers that elucidate CER policy priorities;
• Communication: Supporting the communications team by crafting blogs, social media updates, bill summaries, op-eds, and generating webinar and event content focused on Community Resilience and CER; Project Development: As needed, enhancing or showcasing TCC policy priorities, building the capacity of local community efforts in community energy resilience planning that leads to the construction of community energy resilience projects in at-risk communities;
• Accountable for the annual workplan and budget for the Community Energy Resilience initiative;
• Assisting in the writing, execution, and reporting for public and private grants;
• Additional tasks assigned by the Chief Program Officer.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent along with a minimum of seven years of relevant work experience
• In-depth knowledge of the distributed renewable energy landscape, including vehicle-to-grid integration, as well as associated policies and technologies
• Proven expertise in climate science, policy, and principles of environmental justice
• Familiarity with the California legislative and regulatory framework and experience in policy advocacy
• Capacity to think strategically and plan according to desired outcomes
• Experience in coalition work and partnership building towards a common objective
• Background in the clean energy sector
• Strong research and analytical capabilities
• Exceptional written, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage competing priorities
• Self-driven with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
• Highly organized with a keen attention to detail
• Experience in fundraising or grant writing is a plus
• Proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and online tools essential for a remote work setting.
