COBOL Developer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Navigate through COBOL repositories created by the candidate, detailing program architecture, business logic, and design choices.

• Develop, assess, and troubleshoot COBOL programs, which include copybooks, JCL, and file management (VSAM, sequential, indexed).

• Assess AI-generated COBOL code for accuracy, style, and maintainability.

• Deliver clear written evaluations.

• Generate realistic tasks and test scenarios informed by actual mainframe and batch-processing situations.

• Record legacy patterns and modernization strategies, including COBOL-to-Java/C# migration and the refactoring of monolithic applications.

• Enhance the capability of modern AI systems to comprehend, author, and modernize COBOL.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 3 years of practical COBOL development experience.

• Developed and maintain at least one substantial COBOL repository (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, or private codebase).

• Strong understanding of COBOL divisions, data structures (PIC clauses, COMP/COMP-3, REDEFINES, OCCURS), and procedural logic.

• Familiarity with JCL and at least one of the following: CICS, DB2, IMS, or VSAM.

• Proficient in written English with the ability to articulate code to non-experts.

• Experience with IBM z/OS, Micro Focus COBOL, or GnuCOBOL (preferred).

• Background in banking, insurance, government, or other industries with a heavy reliance on mainframes (preferred).

• Involvement in legacy modernization initiatives (preferred).

• Knowledge of a contemporary programming language such as Java, Python, or C# (preferred).
