Chief Technology Officer

📋 Description

• Formulate and implement a long-term technology strategy that aligns with the priorities of the organization, programs, and products.

• Define technology principles, governance protocols, and investment focuses across product and enterprise systems, including yearly roadmaps and technology operating and capital budgets linked to organizational outcomes.

• Provide counsel to executive leadership and the Board on technology opportunities, risks, infrastructure, and digital transformation initiatives.

• Lead the internal AI Committee, defining the organization's AI vision, enablement strategy, and governance policies.

• Ensure that technology governance processes support and align with the organization's data strategy in collaboration with data leadership.

• Assess emerging technologies to identify areas where innovation can significantly enhance mission effectiveness and user value.

• Supervise the Product team through its senior leader, ensuring a robust product strategy, roadmaps, and execution.

• Collaborate with the VP of Product to align architecture, platform investments, and engineering capacity to facilitate the product roadmap.

• Balance innovation, user requirements, technical feasibility, and organizational capacity across all digital offerings.

• Develop an organization-wide cybersecurity strategy and risk management practices, including incident response planning, business continuity, and disaster recovery protocols.

• Manage technology compliance requirements necessary for serving K-12 school districts, including policies and controls for student data privacy and security obligations.

• Oversee district technology approvals, security assessments, vendor questionnaires, and procurement-related technical documentation while ensuring readiness for audits and compliance reviews.

• Maintain security controls, access governance, and security awareness initiatives, and establish policies governing technology use and information security.

• Continuously monitor technology risks within the organization and provide regular reports to executive leadership.

• Lead the strategy and performance management of the managed IT services partner by defining service expectations, SLAs, escalation procedures, and accountability mechanisms.

• Oversee internal technology operations, including devices and collaboration tools; manage identity, networking, and help desk effectiveness to ensure reliable, secure, and scalable technology support for staff.

• Collaborate with data leadership to build and sustain the infrastructure necessary for organizational measurement, reporting, and impact analysis, ensuring responsible data use.

• Set standards for architecture, integrations, technical quality, and platform sustainability; oversee application lifecycle management, technical debt prioritization, and platform reliability.

• Advise on build-versus-buy decisions and manage technology vendor selection, contract negotiations, performance management, and ROI assessments.

• Propel modernization and operational efficiency across enterprise systems.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

• Advanced degree is preferred.

• Ten to twelve years of experience, including at least seven to ten years in leadership roles within technology, product management, engineering, or digital transformation, with a minimum of five years leading cross-functional technology teams.

• Proven experience in leading technology strategy for a school district, SaaS company, EdTech company, or similar organization, particularly those with 25 to 200 employees.

• Demonstrated success in leading product functions through senior product leaders to deliver customer-focused digital products.

• Experience managing outsourced technology partners, managed service providers, software vendors, and handling technology budgets, contracts, and investment decisions.

• Experience as part of an executive leadership team contributing to organizational strategy.

• Mission-driven leader passionate about enhancing education through technology, with a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

• Comprehensive understanding of modern software development, cloud infrastructure, systems architecture, APIs, data integration, and enterprise technology.

• Experience in designing and implementing security frameworks compliant with regulatory and compliance standards.

• Familiarity with managing enterprise productivity platforms, CRM systems, learning technologies, analytics platforms, and business applications.

• Knowledge of AI technologies, automation, and emerging tech trends, with the ability to assess suitable organizational applications.

• Familiarity with student data privacy requirements and technology compliance frameworks, including FERPA, COPPA, SOPIPA, state student data privacy laws, and accessibility standards like WCAG.

• Preferred experience in managing district technology reviews, security questionnaires, procurement requirements, and integrations such as single sign-on, rostering, and learning management systems.

• Experience leading security compliance readiness, audits, and the organizational change required to achieve and maintain certification.
