Certified Outpatient Hospital/Facility Coding Specialist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Texas.

📋 Description

• Evaluate medical record documentation to pinpoint relevant diagnoses and procedures that necessitate code assignment for outpatient records.

• Precisely code diagnoses and procedures in accordance with ICD-10-CM coding conventions for purposes of reimbursement, research, and compliance with federal regulations.

• Review records to ensure the specificity of diagnoses and procedures and to facilitate appropriate reimbursement for hospital and professional charges.

• Engage with physicians when code assignments are complex or when documentation is insufficient, ambiguous, or unclear.

• Stay updated on coding and reimbursement reporting guidelines and communicate any concerns to the manager.

• Assign ICD-10-CM, modifiers, and HCPCS codes to outpatient records.

• Maintain a coding accuracy rate of 95% or higher for ICD-10-CM and/or HCPCS and meet productivity standards while minimizing errors in abstraction.

• Adhere to AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding and official coding guidelines.

• Ensure safe care while following Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, standards, budgetary specifications, and quality expectations.

• Support departmental goals and act as a preceptor, mentor, and resource for less experienced staff.

• Create compassionate and personalized experiences for patients and colleagues.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.

⛳️ Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED is mandatory.

• An Associate degree in Health Information Management or a related Healthcare Field is preferred.

• RHIT, RHIA, or relevant coding certification(s) from AHIMA or AAPC are required.

• A minimum of three years of hospital or ambulatory coding experience is required for Surgery/Observation.

• A minimum of two years of hospital or ambulatory coding experience is required for the Emergency Department.

• A minimum of two years of hospital or ambulatory coding experience is required for Interventional Radiology.

• One year of hospital or ambulatory coding experience is preferred for Ancillary/Recurring.

• Experience coding in a level 1 trauma facility or academic teaching facility is preferred.

• Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.

• Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM and/or CPT is required.

• Analytical skills to interpret health record data and assign the correct codes are necessary.

• Proficient understanding of human anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and surgical terminology is crucial.

• Critical thinking, sound judgment, and decision-making abilities are necessary.

• Familiarity with coding compliance policies, official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal policies and procedures is required.

• Proficient navigation skills in a Windows-based application environment are necessary.
