Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Iowa.

📋 Description

• Deliver fundamental breastfeeding education and assistance to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants.

• Offer telephone counseling and schedule contact sessions with assigned participants.

• Share breastfeeding information, support, and education addressing common concerns.

• Be accessible outside regular clinic hours for calls or text messages from breastfeeding mothers.

• Refer participants to breastfeeding specialists, CPAs, or relevant health and social service agencies as needed.

• Keep precise contact records and fulfill necessary reporting requirements.

• Participate in breastfeeding promotion, outreach initiatives, special projects, and assigned responsibilities.

• Provide breastfeeding support to WIC participants who speak Spanish.

• Offer Spanish-language assistance or translation support to WIC staff.

• Review assigned breastfeeding materials and stay updated on breastfeeding topics.

• Learn and adhere to agency policies, practices, and procedures.

• Build effective relationships with staff, management, and community contacts.

• Attend monthly coordinator meetings, group meetings, and conferences as suitable.

• Complete local agency training, WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum, WIC data system training, and ongoing education.

• Adapt to evolving organizational needs.

• Keep the work area organized and tidy.

• Maintain agency-issued equipment such as cell phones and laptops in good condition.

⛳️ Requirements

• Personal experience breastfeeding at least one infant for a minimum of 6 months.

• Must be a paraprofessional without extensive professional training in health, nutrition, or breastfeeding clinic management.

• Must be a current or former breastfeeding WIC participant.

• Capability to work effectively with a diverse population of low-income individuals who may face language or cultural barriers.

• Ability to uphold confidentiality.

• Capacity to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.

• Valid driver’s license, insurance, and dependable transportation.

• Good driving record.

• Successful completion of Motor Vehicle Records checks prior to hiring and annually thereafter.

• Successful completion of Department of Human Services Criminal History and Child Abuse Information Records checks before hiring and every two years thereafter.

• Local travel is required.

• Strong communication abilities and basic computer skills.

• Capacity to maintain agency-issued equipment in optimal working condition.

• Proficiency in providing Spanish-language support.
