Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Iowa.

📋 Description

• Deliver fundamental breastfeeding education, support, and encouragement to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants.

• Provide telephone counseling and maintain scheduled contacts with assigned participants.

• Inform mothers about the advantages of breastfeeding, common obstacles, and how to manage typical breastfeeding issues.

• Be accessible outside regular clinic hours for calls or text messages from breastfeeding mothers.

• Refer participants to the WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert, CPA, or other relevant health/social service agencies as needed.

• Keep accurate records of contacts and complete necessary reports.

• Assist WIC staff with breastfeeding promotion, special projects, and outreach initiatives.

• Offer support to Spanish-speaking WIC participants and provide Spanish-language assistance or translation services to WIC staff.

• Read assigned breastfeeding literature and stay updated on breastfeeding topics.

• Learn and adhere to agency policies, practices, and procedures.

• Build effective working relationships with staff, management, and community contacts.

• Attend monthly meetings with the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator and participate in scheduled group meetings/conferences.

• Complete local agency, WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum, WIC data system, and ongoing mandatory training.

• Adapt to evolving organizational needs and maintain a tidy and organized work area.

• Ensure proper maintenance of cell phone, laptop, and other agency-issued equipment.

⛳️ Requirements

• Personal experience breastfeeding at least one baby for a minimum of 6 months.

• Should be a current or former breastfeeding WIC participant.

• Must be a paraprofessional without extensive professional training in health, nutrition, or clinic management of breastfeeding.

• Ability to effectively work with a diverse population of low-income individuals who may face language or cultural barriers.

• Maintain confidentiality at all times.

• Capability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.

• Possess a valid driver’s license, insurance, and reliable transportation.

• Maintain a clean driving record.

• Successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Records check prior to hire and annually afterward.

• Successfully pass a Department of Human Services Criminal History and Request for Child Abuse Information Records check before hire and every two years thereafter.

• Local travel is required.

• Strong communication skills and basic computer proficiency.

• Ensure agency-issued equipment is kept in good working order.

• Provide Spanish-language assistance or translation support for Spanish-speaking WIC participants.
