Backend Engineer, TypeScript

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Japan.

📋 Description

• Assume responsibility for backend architecture and implementation across various products within the Startale ecosystem.

• Design, construct, and sustain scalable production APIs and backend services utilized by customer-facing applications.

• Develop and manage high-performance distributed systems capable of accommodating large user bases and efficiently handling substantial production traffic.

• Create backend systems with a strong emphasis on scalability, fault tolerance, reliability, and long-term maintainability.

• Develop and maintain data pipelines, background workers, asynchronous processing systems, and event-driven architectures.

• Build and sustain blockchain integrations and indexing systems that ingest, process, and deliver on-chain data to both internal services and user-facing applications.

• Design efficient database schemas, refine complex queries, and ensure the long-term scalability of data storage systems.

• Collaborate across both Web2 and Web3 backend infrastructure, integrating traditional backend systems with blockchain protocols and decentralized infrastructure.

• Diagnose and resolve intricate production issues, performance bottlenecks, reliability challenges, and scaling obstacles.

• Construct systems with robust observability, monitoring, alerting, and operational tooling.

• Persistently enhance backend architecture, deployment pipelines, system reliability, and engineering methodologies.

• Act swiftly, make informed technical decisions autonomously, and take ownership of delivering production-ready systems.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in building and operating production backend systems within modern engineering environments.

• Strong proficiency in TypeScript and contemporary backend frameworks (NestJS, Fastify, Express, or similar).

• In-depth understanding of backend architecture, API design, service-oriented architecture, and distributed systems design.

• Capability to independently design and deliver complex backend systems with minimal supervision.

• Proven history of constructing and managing backend systems that serve a large user base in production settings.

• Experience in designing systems that function reliably under high traffic, substantial workloads, and demanding production scenarios.

• Strong grasp of performance optimization, scalability bottlenecks, concurrency, fault tolerance, and infrastructure reliability.

• Experience managing systems where uptime, consistency, and reliability significantly affect end users.

• Strong operational mindset with experience in handling production incidents and scaling challenges in live environments.

• Deep expertise in PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, query optimization, migrations, and production database management.

• Experience in building systems that process vast amounts of structured or event-driven data.

• Strong understanding of observability, logging, monitoring, and service health management.

• Experience in creating backend systems for modern Web2 applications.

• Experience integrating with blockchain infrastructure, node APIs, smart contracts, or decentralized protocols.

• Familiarity with blockchain indexing systems, event processing pipelines, or other on-chain data infrastructure.

• Good understanding of wallet architecture, transaction lifecycle, signing flows, and blockchain data models.

• Familiarity with DeFi protocols and blockchain-based financial applications, whether as a developer or an advanced user.
