Backend Engineer, Repository Management – Ruby

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.

📋 Description

• Design and implement secure, well-tested, and efficient features and enhancements utilizing Ruby and GraphQL.

• Navigate complex requirements and legacy challenges to provide clear solutions while ensuring system reliability.

• Contribute to backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic for repository management.

• Work collaboratively across functions and teams, both asynchronously and synchronously, engaging domain experts and seeking guidance when necessary.

• Utilize AI agents for well-defined tasks and critically assess their outputs.

• Write maintainable code in accordance with GitLab standards and integrate feedback from code reviews.

• Oversee production health metrics, engage in Tier 2 on-call duties, troubleshoot incidents, assist in root cause analysis, and enhance observability and resilience.

• Share expertise through code reviews, technical documentation, and daily collaboration.

• Assist in advancing GitLab’s branch protection feature while ensuring availability, reliability, and stability.

• Contribute to roadmap initiatives such as Branch Rules, Codeowners, merge strategies, and AI-enhanced repository management and configuration.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in developing backend web applications, services, or APIs, with a background in Ruby and GraphQL or a willingness to learn.

• Knowledge of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and best practices for backend performance.

• Experience in contributing to policy, permissions, or rules-based features in web applications.

• Proficient in writing backend unit and integration tests.

• Familiarity with Git and collaborative code review practices.

• Experience utilizing AI coding tools or agents and evaluating their outputs.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

• Capability to collaborate in a remote, asynchronous work environment.

• Ability to prioritize tasks, navigate ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance for complex decisions.
