AVP/VP Underwriting, Builders Risk

📋 Description

• Establish the underwriting strategy for the Builders Risk division.

• Assess and underwrite wood frame builders risk projects.

• Oversee and expand a portfolio of projects while optimizing carrier capacity within established agreements and guidelines.

• Lead, mentor, and develop Associate Underwriters and Underwriters.

• Supervise a small to mid-sized team, including conducting performance evaluations, hiring, recruiting, and making termination decisions.

• Set team production objectives that align with division goals and drive execution.

• Review referrals submitted by team members.

• Manage a portfolio in line with underwriting guidelines and recommended pricing tools.

• Contribute to the formulation of governance and underwriting guidelines.

• Take ownership of division-level projects or initiatives beyond the immediate area of expertise.

• Oversee a small team or a segment of the division budget when necessary.

• Cultivate relationships with capacity providers.

• Serve as a subject matter expert for colleagues, leadership, and team members.

• Implement advanced technical underwriting principles to complex wood frame and renovation risks.

• Achieve annual new business targets, premium income, quote volumes, and hit ratios.

• Build connections with key producers and place additional business.

• Collaborate with product, claims, and actuarial teams.

• Report to the SVP of Underwriting or higher.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in risk management, psychology, criminal justice, mathematics, finance, business, or a similar field is preferred.

• 5-12 years of relevant underwriting experience.

• Comprehensive understanding of technical underwriting principles and risk evaluation.

• Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making capabilities.

• Demonstrated ability to cultivate and manage broker and client relationships.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

• Proven ability to handle complex risks with sound judgment.

• Highly self-driven with exceptional attention to detail.

• Capacity to remain stationary approximately 50% of the time, with occasional movement around the office to access files and equipment.

• Willingness to travel up to 30% or more as necessary for client meetings, conferences, or industry events.
