
Associate Staff Attorney, Workers' Compensation

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Act as a representative for The Hartford and its policyholders in California workers’ compensation cases from initiation to resolution.
• Manage California workers’ compensation defense matters with guidance from experienced attorneys.
• Assist in developing case strategies through factual investigations, legal research, file assessments, and risk analysis.
• Prepare and draft pleadings, discovery responses, motions, settlement documents, and petitions.
• Get ready for and engage in depositions, hearings, trials, and alternative dispute resolution sessions.
• Update Claims Partners and internal stakeholders on case status, legal assessments, recommendations, and proposed next steps.
• Collaborate with opposing counsel, WCAB personnel, experts, and external vendors.
• Participate in team huddles, case roundtables, file reviews, and strategic discussions.
• Keep up to date with California workers’ compensation laws, WCAB procedures, and legal technology.
• Fulfill continuing legal education requirements as necessary.
• 0–2 years of experience in legal practice, including internships, clerkships, early exposure to litigation, or equivalent legal experience.
• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
• Valid license to practice law in California.
• Good standing member of the relevant Bar Association.
• Strong skills in legal research, writing, analysis, and oral communication.
• Familiarity with workers’ compensation, insurance defense, civil litigation, or insurance-related matters is beneficial but not mandatory.
• Ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines efficiently.
• Capability to progress towards independent case management with suitable guidance.
• Professional and client-oriented communication abilities.
• Skill in collaborating effectively within a matrixed legal and claims environment.
• Comfort in a predominantly remote working setting.
• Proficiency in using technology to facilitate a paperless legal practice.
• Applicants must be residents of California.
