This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Act as the main legal advisor for the complete homeowner origination lifecycle, covering marketing, application, underwriting support, closing, document recording, and servicing.
• Provide counsel on federal and state regulatory compliance concerning home equity investment and consumer finance products.
• Convert regulatory requirements into actionable business guidance.
• Oversee consumer finance compliance issues, including UDAAP, fair lending, and associated consumer protection responsibilities.
• Review and approve product, marketing, and advertising materials.
• Draft, negotiate, and manage agreements related to vendors, title, and escrow.
• Offer advice on compliance with privacy and data security regulations, including GLBA and CCPA obligations.
• Handle litigation, consumer complaints, and disputes while coordinating with outside counsel as necessary.
• Stay updated on legal and regulatory changes impacting home equity investments and residential real estate finance.
• Modify policies, forms, and processes in response to legal and regulatory changes.
• Collaborate with origination, operations, marketing, and product teams to support growth while mitigating legal and regulatory risks.
• Report directly to the General Counsel.
• Assist in developing the legal framework for a growing home equity investment originator; the position may evolve to include team leadership over time.
• 7+ years of legal experience, ideally combining law firm, regulatory agency, and/or in-house roles at a loan originator or similar consumer finance organization.
• Juris Doctor (JD) degree required.
• Active bar membership in good standing in a US state.
• Strong understanding of consumer finance and residential mortgage products, or closely related regulated financial offerings.
• Knowledge of the regulatory frameworks governing consumer finance and residential mortgage products.
• Practical knowledge of consumer protection regulations, including UDAAP and fair lending principles.
• Experience in advising on privacy and data security compliance, including GLBA and CCPA is preferred.
• Background in drafting and negotiating vendor, title, escrow, or other transaction-related agreements.
• Experience in managing litigation, consumer complaints, or disputes is preferred.
• Strong business-oriented judgment and the ability to provide clear, actionable advice under pressure.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; capable of explaining legal risks in simple terms to non-lawyers.
