This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Editing, publishing, and writing – 50% of the time
• Assigning and editing 2-5 feature, op-ed, analysis, and other editorial pieces weekly, collaborating closely with external contributors to refine pitches for assignment and providing substantive, line, and copy edits promptly
• Packaging articles for publication: crafting sharp, engaging headlines and deks; selecting visually appealing, editorially relevant, and interesting imagery; adhering to AP style; uploading and formatting content in Planetizen’s content management system, and scheduling for release.
• Actively participating in the development of editorial processes, content types, and overall editorial ideation, including proactively identifying and resolving barriers to success and generating opportunities for improvement and growth
• Composing brief editorial posts (such as monthly summaries and Planetizen’s Federal Action Tracker) and contributing unique feature, op-ed, analysis, or other editorial content pieces
• Sourcing, summarizing, and publishing approximately 30 pieces of essential urban planning news each week for Planetizen’s aggregated newsfeed.
• Writing and formatting templated posts for Planetizen’s social media channels and newsletters
• Utilizing analytics and other audience engagement metrics to monitor and enhance editorial content performance in line with Planetizen’s strategic objectives
• Completing editing and quality assurance tasks for the Planetizen Guide to Graduate Urban Planning Programs, Planetizen Courses, AICP Exam Prep, and other Planetizen products.
• A minimum of 2 years of experience in a newsroom or similar journalistic/editorial setting
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment managing a high volume of content
• Strong judgment, critical thinking skills, and editorial intuition
• Capacity to take initiative, self-start, and work independently while also collaborating within a small team that values teamwork and mutual support
• Exceptional time-management and organizational abilities, with a proven track record of handling multiple projects at various stages simultaneously
• Proficiency in using data and other audience engagement metrics to make informed decisions that enhance editorial performance
• Familiarity with Google Workspace, Google Analytics, Data Studio, Drupal, Canva, Sprout Social, or similar tools and systems
• Experience or a strong interest in urban planning.
