This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Act as CHAI's principal technical advisor on machine learning and artificial intelligence.
• Support CHAI projects and Ministries of Health in the responsible development and deployment of models.
• Guide teams in selecting technical methodologies spanning traditional machine learning, data science, large language models, and agentic systems.
• Ensure project quality by reviewing model construction, evaluation, and performance metrics.
• Set standards, methodologies, and recommendations for thorough model development and validation.
• Offer practical technical guidance and senior-level advisory support to projects.
• Recruit, mentor, and develop a worldwide team of technical specialists.
• Collaborate with government partners to enhance capacity for developing, evaluating, and maintaining ML and AI solutions.
• Simplify technical ideas and trade-offs for audiences without technical backgrounds.
• Keep abreast of advancements in machine learning and AI, evaluating their applicability to CHAI's initiatives.
• Take on additional duties as required to enhance the technical excellence of the AI team's efforts.
• Report to the Senior Director, Head of AI.
• Travel frequently to CHAI program countries, including occasional extended stays of multiple weeks.
• A strong enthusiasm for AI and its capacity to enhance health systems in low- and middle-income nations.
• 8 to 12+ years of pertinent professional experience in machine learning, data science, or a closely related domain.
• Extensive knowledge in supervised learning, optimization and linear programming, and time series analysis.
• Practical experience with large language models and agentic systems.
• Proven capability to assess model quality and rigorously measure and validate performance.
• An advanced degree in data science, statistics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, computer science, or a similar technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical individuals.
• Strategic thinking ability, with skills to navigate ambiguity and solve problems in a dynamic, multicultural environment.
• Willingness to travel regularly to CHAI program countries, including some multi-week trips.
• Preferred: experience applying machine learning or AI in health, global health, or global development contexts.
• Preferred: experience in low- and middle-income country settings.
• Preferred: experience collaborating with governments or Ministries of Health.
• Preferred: experience in building, mentoring, or leading technical teams.
• Pending work authorization and country approval for CHAI country offices.
