Applied AI Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +45 more states.

📋 Description

• Define both business and technical requirements as well as the technical strategy for AI capabilities.

• Take ownership of capabilities from inception to completion, encompassing discovery, design, development, validation, deployment, and operation.

• Collaborate across client delivery, internal product development, rapid proofs of concept, and internal enablement initiatives.

• Choose suitable AI patterns, including extraction, classification, summarization, retrieval, or agentic workflows.

• Suggest simpler non-AI alternatives when appropriate.

• Establish measurable success criteria, accuracy targets, human review thresholds, acceptance conditions, and definitions of failure.

• Develop comprehensive capabilities that include prompt and retrieval design, structured outputs, tool and function definitions, API integration, data management, error state handling, and user interfaces.

• Create evaluation sets using real data, assess results, iterate, and assess deployment readiness.

• Make architectural decisions while considering quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization constraints.

• Operationalize capabilities with governance, logging, traceability, monitoring, and post-launch optimization.

• Assist clients in understanding possibilities, anticipating needs, shaping future projects, and creating proofs of concept.

• Mentor engineers who are new to AI through code reviews, pairing, and guidance.

• Keep up-to-date with models, tools, and techniques, and develop reusable patterns.

• Create documentation that covers solution behavior, limitations, validation, and handling of incorrect results.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 4 years of experience in building and delivering production software.

• At least 1 year of direct experience in developing applications that incorporate large language models, including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, structured extraction, tool usage, and agent patterns.

• Proven ability to manage a capability from start to finish, transforming ambiguous requirements into a reliable production solution.

• Demonstrated experience in evaluating AI system quality, including the creation of test sets, defining metrics, and making deployment decisions based on data-driven evidence.

• Strong programming skills in a general-purpose language such as Python, TypeScript, or SQL, utilized across the entire application rather than solely in the AI layer.

• Established ability to lead discussions about requirements with non-technical stakeholders and convert their input into a technical strategy.

• Sound judgment regarding trade-offs among accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity, with the capacity to communicate these trade-offs to both engineers and executives.

• Exceptional written communication skills.

• Ability to navigate ambiguous requirements independently, define a suitable technical strategy, and drive work through to implementation and delivery with minimal guidance.

• Willingness to educate others.

• U.S. Citizenship is required.

• Capability to obtain and maintain any necessary federal government background investigation, suitability determination, or security clearance for assigned client engagements.

• A Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Data Science, Business Analytics, Mathematics, or Computer Science is preferred.

• Experience with low-code or application platforms like Appian, OutSystems, Mendix, Microsoft Power Platform, ServiceNow, or Salesforce is preferred.

• Experience in public sector or regulated industry delivery, including compliance and authorization processes, is preferred.

• Familiarity with cloud AI services such as AWS Bedrock or Azure OpenAI is preferred.

• Knowledge of LLM evaluation or observability tools is preferred.

• Previous experience in consulting, solutions engineering, professional services, or embedded client work is preferred.
