Application Engineer, Data Center Software

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Collaborate directly with customer data center operations and engineering teams to evaluate software environments, lead integration discussions, and convert requirements into actionable designs across DCIM platforms, custom dashboards, hypervisors, and management APIs.

• Design, develop, and validate bespoke API connectors between Karman and customer-specific data center software systems.

• Confirm server builds align with Karman's software specifications; create and execute configuration checkers and test suites for installation across customer environments.

• Perform benchmark-driven and exploratory performance testing to identify and mitigate bottlenecks.

• Independently troubleshoot integration issues and installation failures, utilizing in-depth knowledge of the Karman platform gained through close collaboration with internal software engineering teams.

• Facilitate the execution and approval of software installation requirement checklists for each customer engagement.

• Adopt an AI-first approach to automating processes and generating test frameworks, configuration checkers, integration artifacts, and deployment documentation.

• Develop the software integration playbook — creating repeatable processes, templates, and documentation that extend beyond individual customer engagements.

• Create and sustain software integration artifacts, including software validation checklists, test plans, configuration guides, KPI trackers, and After-Action Reports.

• Engage in roadmap meetings, engineering design reviews, and sprint planning to remain current with the Karman platform.

• Act as the feedback conduit between customer deployments and core engineering, translating integration insights into platform enhancements.

• Assist the TechOps team by providing software integration expertise for escalated production incidents related to initial installation.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of server software engineering experience with hands-on involvement in or with data center server environments.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent training and work experience.

• Strong expertise in Linux system administration, including server builds, OS configuration, and service management.

• Proven ability to design and execute API integrations between diverse software systems, including REST APIs and other common patterns.

• Significant experience with Kubernetes, containers, and virtual machines, including bare metal Kubernetes deployments.

• Proven ability to write test frameworks, configuration checkers, and validation scripts; experience with both benchmark-driven and exploratory performance testing.

• Language agnostic, with a baseline proficiency in Python or Rust.

• Familiarity with communication protocols and serialization patterns (e.g., ZeroMQ, Protobuf, gRPC, Kafka).

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the capability to engage customer data center operations teams and translate requirements into integration designs.

• Proven ability to work independently and manage complex technical problems from start to finish.

• High learning agility across various customer software environments.

• Experience integrating with DCIM platforms, hypervisors, or data center management APIs (e.g., Redfish, IPMI, or vendor-specific management interfaces).
