AI/ML Architect

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Collaborate with program and project leaders to define and produce architectural representations and documents for AI systems throughout the VHA enterprise.

• Ensure logical consistency and address any unresolved technical challenges.

• Create reference architectures and advocate for MLOps standards suitable for VHA adoption.

• Design and engage in discussions regarding system strategies for platforms, applications, and networks.

• Generate technical content for AI entrepreneur and adopter playbooks.

• Offer technical guidance to early-stage AI products in five field pilot partnerships.

• Suggest AI product lifecycle standards, including model registry, model CI/CD, automated retraining, monitoring, drift detection, and model documentation.

• Formulate the AI catalog redesign plan in collaboration with VA IT teams.

• Assess third-party and vendor AI solutions against VHA's technical, security, and interoperability requirements.

• Convert VA security and authorization requirements into actionable architectural decisions.

• Add technical depth to AI risk management playbooks and oversight assessment guides.

• Support the operational playbook of the AI center of excellence with technical infrastructure and tooling models.

⛳️ Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience in software or systems architecture.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Proven experience in defining and creating architectural representations and documentation.

• Demonstrated ability to address technical issues and ensure logical coherence.

• Familiarity with a range of software programs and programming languages.

• Some hands-on programming experience and capability.

• Competence in designing and discussing system strategies for platforms, applications, and networks.

• Must possess authorization to work in the United States.

• All tasks must be conducted within a jurisdiction governed by U.S. law or its territories.

• Must be able to obtain and sustain a favorably adjudicated Tier 1 / National Agency Check with Written Inquiries (NACI) background investigation.

• Completion of VA Privacy and Information Security Awareness and Rules of Behavior training (TMS #10176) is required prior to system access and annually thereafter.

• Preferred: ten or more years of architecture experience, including five or more years in establishing or maintaining enterprise-level AI/ML product pipelines.

• MS degree preferred.

• Cloud architect certification (Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud) is preferred.

• Experience with model registry, CI/CD pipelines for models, automated retraining, monitoring and drift detection, feature stores, and model cards is desirable.

• Familiarity with VA Arches or a comparable accredited federal AI and analytics platform is an advantage.

• Working knowledge of FHIR, HL7, OMOP, and EHR or clinical data warehouse environments is beneficial.

• Experience in cloud architecture with Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.

• Proven ability to conduct technical due diligence on vendor AI products.

• Awareness of FedRAMP and Authority to Operate processes.

• Experience in Agile and SAFe delivery methodologies.

• Ability to produce reference architecture and standards documentation.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

• Understanding of military and Veteran populations.
