AI Subject Matter Expert

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Act as the senior AI technical advisor for the contractor team at the VHA National AI Institute, focusing on AI inventory, risk management, oversight, and enterprise strategy workstreams.

• Create and maintain AI risk management playbooks, standard operating procedures, guides, and frequently asked questions documents.

• Convert federal AI policies into practical guidance for VHA audiences who may not specialize in AI.

• Provide counsel to AI use case owners on the development and execution of AI risk management plans through collaborative sessions, office hours, and asynchronous support.

• Design and implement a pilot for AI risk stratification, including a methodology for evaluating and assigning risk levels to AI systems.

• Assist VHA business units in formulating and revising AI innovation and governance strategies across at least five business units.

• Create training materials and conduct training webinars for AI use case owners and oversight personnel.

• Deliver expert content and programming for VHA AI governance bodies, including training sessions and summits.

• Investigate emerging approaches and tools for AI risk management to brief Institute leadership and government stakeholders.

• Develop playbooks for AI entrepreneurs and adopters that outline pathways for internal development and vendor evaluation.

• Provide advice to government decision-makers without making agency decisions.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 15 years of experience in the life sciences sector, concentrating on the creation and implementation of data science and AI solutions to enhance healthcare innovation.

• Preferred eight or more years of experience in developing or applying AI tools within a large-scale healthcare enterprise.

• Proven experience in leading initiatives to aggregate, analyze, and interpret health information.

• Skilled in developing processes, solutions, and information architectures that utilize medical imaging, electronic health records, wearable data, and -omics data.

• Experience with data platforms to scale machine learning algorithms via a ModelOps AI platform.

• Doctorate in a computational, data science, health informatics, clinical, or life sciences field.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain a favorably adjudicated Tier 1 / NACI background investigation.

• Completion of VA Privacy and Information Security Awareness and Rules of Behavior training (TMS #10176) is required prior to system access and annually thereafter.

• Authorization to work in the United States is mandatory.

• All work must be conducted within a jurisdiction governed by U.S. law or its territories.

• Strong understanding of federal AI policy and governance, including EO 13960, OMB M-25-21 and M-25-22, the VA Trustworthy AI Framework, and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.

• Experience with AI use case inventories, model registries, or similar enterprise AI transparency mechanisms.

• Familiarity with ModelOps or related platforms.

• Prior experience with VA, VHA, DoD health, or other federal health agencies is highly preferred.

• Experience advising clinical stakeholders on AI risk within a health system context.

• Familiarity with VA Arches or similar accredited federal AI and analytics environments.

• Experience in authoring governance documents such as charters, playbooks, SOPs, and assessment guides that have been adopted by an operating organization.

• Knowledge of military and veteran populations.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
