AI Lead, Python Tools

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Netherlands.

📋 Description

• Oversee the technical design of AI functionalities within PyCharm and our Python tools, encompassing MCP integrations, agent workflows, tool design, and context management.

• Develop and implement features independently – this role requires hands-on technical leadership.

• Assist the team in effectively adopting AI technologies by offering technical guidance, assessing approaches, and sharing practical methodologies.

• Assess emerging AI tools, frameworks, and providers, making informed decisions about what to build and what to integrate.

• Collaborate closely with product managers, ML engineers, QA experts, and senior developers to transform product concepts into concrete technical plans.

• Navigate a substantial Kotlin/Java codebase and unveil IntelliJ Platform functionalities – such as code analysis, inspections, refactorings, and type inference – for AI-driven workflows.

• Participate in cross-team AI initiatives and assist in defining shared engineering practices when applicable.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive software engineering experience, especially in Python and/or Kotlin/JVM.

• Profound, hands-on knowledge of contemporary AI tools for developers, including coding assistants, agents, MCP, and LLM-based workflows.

• Experience in working with large, established codebases and effecting significant technical change without sacrificing quality.

• Understanding of LLM evaluation and benchmarking.

• Proven ability to make sound technical decisions in dynamic, uncertain environments, such as proposing architectures, building prototypes, and iterating based on feedback.

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence technical direction without formal authority.

• Strong product awareness and a commitment to addressing real user challenges, rather than merely creating intriguing technology.

• Familiarity with IDE or developer tooling internals, such as language servers, code analysis, or related systems (Preferred).

• Experience with the Python AI/ML ecosystem (Preferred).
