This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Directly oversee a team of 7 underwriters, reporting to the President of E&S Property & Casualty and Inland Marine.
• Take ownership of the underwriting strategy, risk appetite, and portfolio composition for the E&S Excess Liability book.
• Establish and uphold underwriting standards, attachment point discipline, coverage structure guidelines, and pricing parameters aligned with the profitability goals of the book.
• Lead underwriting decisions for complex and large accounts; act as the technical authority and escalation point for the team.
• Maintain well-defined appetite boundaries — steering clear of invasive medical and NY Labor Law exposure.
• Design layered excess solutions above both occurrence and claims-made underlying policies.
• Monitor and proactively manage loss ratios, combined ratios, and portfolio trends by class and segment; implement corrective actions when performance declines.
• Collaborate with actuarial and finance teams on pricing adequacy, rate monitoring, and reserving inputs for an excess book.
• Track submission flow, hit ratios, and renewal retention effectively.
• Manage premium concentration by class.
• Mentor, lead, and develop a team of 7 excess liability underwriters.
• Over 10 years of experience in E&S or specialty casualty/excess liability underwriting, with significant time spent in a wholesale/non-admitted environment.
• Proven leadership experience managing underwriting teams; adept at functioning as both a strategic leader and a technical contributor.
• Established history of building or managing a profitable excess liability book across a varied commercial class mix.
• Comprehensive knowledge of commercial excess and umbrella underwriting, including attachment point analysis, underlying policy review, and identification of coverage gaps.
• Strong understanding of coverage structures for both occurrence and claims-made underlying policies.
• Familiarity with ISO and proprietary excess forms across various lines.
• Experience in underwriting a diverse class mix including contractors, habitational, amusement, and new ventures.
• Capability to assess underlying carrier quality and program structure for risks with non-standard primary placements.
