This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Provide strategic direction for the Communication Underwriting division.
• Lead, develop, mentor, and motivate Underwriting Managers and Underwriters.
• Cultivate a culture focused on accountability, collaboration, operational excellence, and outstanding client service.
• Set performance expectations and create development opportunities for aspiring leaders.
• Act as the executive escalation point for intricate underwriting scenarios and communication challenges.

• Oversee all underwriting communications with internal teams, clients, brokers, correspondents, and business partners.
• Establish and uphold exceptional client service standards throughout the underwriting organization.
• Ensure that underwriting decisions are communicated clearly, professionally, and within defined service-level expectations.
• Promote uniformity in communication across all underwriting teams.
• Address escalated client service issues while nurturing strong partner relationships.
• Continuously enhance the underwriting communication experience.
• Establish, communicate, and enforce company underwriting guidelines, AFR overlays, agency requirements, and investor policies.
• Ensure consistent credit decision-making across all underwriting teams.
• Serve as the executive authority for complex loan scenarios and exception requests.
• Participate in credit policy committee meetings and offer strategic recommendations.
• Stay updated on evolving agency guidelines, investor changes, and regulatory updates.
• Provide final review and approval guidance for complex, high-value, or escalated loans.
• Collaborate closely with Sales, Operations, Capital Markets, Compliance, Secondary Marketing, Closing, Processing, Quality Control, and Executive Leadership.
• Drive collaboration to enhance workflow efficiency throughout the loan lifecycle.
• Support company initiatives aimed at improving operational performance and customer satisfaction.
• Build strong relationships with agency representatives, investors, and external partners.
• Collaborate on strategic initiatives that enhance communication, quality, and operational execution.
• Ensure all underwriting communications and decisions adhere to agency, investor, and company guidelines.
• Maintain compliance with FHA, VA, USDA, Conventional, CFPB, TRID, RESPA, ECOA, Fair Lending, HMDA, and other relevant regulations.
• Ensure thorough documentation supports underwriting decisions.
• Lead Quality Control remediation efforts and corrective action initiatives.
• Drive consistency in underwriting decisions while minimizing organizational risk.
• Safeguard the integrity of the underwriting process through robust credit governance.
• Develop and monitor department KPIs, dashboards, and performance metrics.
• Analyze underwriting trends and propose operational improvements.
• Conduct root cause analysis for recurring quality or operational issues.
• Develop preventative solutions that enhance efficiency and loan quality.
• Utilize Loan Origination Systems (LOS), Automated Underwriting Systems (AUS), reporting tools, and business intelligence platforms to optimize performance.
• Promote operational excellence while balancing quality, productivity, compliance, and customer experience.
• Mentor Underwriting Managers and future executive leaders.
• Formulate leadership succession plans.
• Create training programs that enhance communication consistency.
• Lead organizational change initiatives.
• Champion employee engagement and retention.
• Drive ongoing process improvement initiatives.
• Encourage innovation and technology adoption.
• Support strategic planning and long-term organizational growth.
• 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in Mortgage Underwriting.
• Proven success in leading large underwriting teams within the mortgage or financial services sector.
• Extensive experience in developing underwriting operations, communication strategies, and enhancing organizational performance.
• Strong knowledge of FHA, VA, USDA, Conventional, Jumbo, Agency, and Investor underwriting guidelines.
• Exceptional skills in strategic thinking, credit analysis, and executive decision-making.
• Proven capability to lead through change while maintaining operational excellence.
• Outstanding leadership, coaching, and team-building skills.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management abilities.
• Strong analytical mindset with experience leveraging KPIs to influence business decisions.
