Underwriting Program Leader

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Develop the strategy, risk appetite, underwriting guidelines, and operational rhythm of the program in collaboration with senior leadership.

• Act as the primary line underwriter, responsible for evaluating and pricing risks.

• Oversee both new business initiatives and renewal processes.

• Establish wholesale and retail distribution networks while setting production targets.

• Manage relationships with brokers and represent the program in the marketplace.

• Work alongside senior leadership, engineering, product, and data science teams to enhance the platform, underwriting workflows, and operational procedures.

• Maintain relationships with reinsurers and capacity partners.

• Be responsible for portfolio performance, including reporting and renewals.

• Build and lead the underwriting, distribution, and operations team as the program expands.

• Oversee the program’s profit and loss, both top line and bottom line.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 10 years of underwriting experience in specialty or commercial lines.

• Extensive expertise in a specific niche.

• Proven track record of managing a substantial portfolio, preferably $50M+ in premium, profitably and at scale.

• A clear program thesis that addresses target niche, profitability, timing, and data/technology advantages.

• Demonstrated underwriting discipline.

• Experience in drafting underwriting guidelines and appetite.

• Proven ability to build and maintain broker relationships that enhance production.

• Proficient in using AI and technology to improve underwriting efficiency and accelerate growth.

• An entrepreneurial mindset with a comfort for handling ambiguity.

• Preferred: experience in launching a program or a new segment.

• Preferred: direct experience working with reinsurers or capacity partners.

• Preferred: experience in leading an underwriting team.
