This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United Kingdom.
• Take ownership of significant core Android product features from design through to release, collaborating closely with the design team.
• Write and review code while actively managing individual features.
• Be responsible for maintaining and enhancing reliability metrics for essential features.
• Review pull requests and offer constructive feedback for development.
• Assist engineers by identifying and resolving technical challenges.
• Recognize reusable solutions for the team and streamline duplicated implementations.
• Ensure shared components are well-tested, clear, and reusable.
• Drive changes in team processes and workflows.
• Minimize the need for manual intervention to ensure correct releases.
• Tackle recurring issues by modifying underlying systems.
• Promote early verification by expanding automated checks prior to QA.
• Lead planning sessions focusing on work that necessitates decision-making.
• Establish appropriate levels of review and approval requirements.
• Engage in discussions with Product, Design, and Engineering teams, highlighting team constraints early on.
• Manage critical issues, oversee feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA.
• Assist early-career engineers by offering meaningful projects and dedicated learning time.
• Over 5 years of experience in software engineering, including leading a team or owning a significant feature while remaining hands-on.
• Proficient in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests.
• Experience in shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background tasks.
• Awareness of the significance of tests and strategies for writing them, including areas that cannot be covered.
• Proven ability to implement a team practice that persists after the candidate has stepped back, including a candid assessment of its costs.
• Comfort in requesting changes in workflow and managing any resulting friction.
• Capability to assess which changes require extensive review versus those that do not, based on system behavior.
• History of creating solutions that the team actively utilizes.
• Ability to articulate how the team collaborates with AI agents.
• Intuition for product design, empathy for users, and a commitment to enhancing Android UI/UX beyond specifications.
• Self-motivation to improve the app and codebase beyond set specifications.
• Strong communication skills.
