Team Lead, Android Core Product

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Slovenia.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of significant Android features from inception to deployment, collaborating closely with the design team throughout the process.

• Oversee, maintain, and enhance reliability metrics for essential features.

• Write code, review pull requests, and offer constructive feedback.

• Assist engineers by identifying and resolving technical obstacles.

• Spot reusable solutions within the team and merge duplicated implementations.

• Ensure shared components are thoroughly tested, clear, and maintainable.

• Drive improvements in team processes and working methods.

• Minimize the need for manual interventions for successful releases.

• Enhance underlying systems when repetitive issues arise.

• Shift verification earlier by broadening automated checks prior to QA.

• Conduct planning focused on work that requires decision-making.

• Establish suitable review levels and sign-off criteria.

• Engage in discussions with Product, Design, and Engineering teams.

• Manage critical issues, take charge of feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA.

• Mentor early-career engineers through learning-oriented tasks and development time.

• Work directly on Speechify's Android text-to-speech application.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 5 years of experience in software engineering, including time spent leading a team or managing a major component while remaining hands-on.

• Strong proficiency in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests.

• Experience in shipping and maintaining background audio or managing other long-running background tasks.

• Awareness of the significance of tests and strategies for writing them, including aspects that cannot be tested.

• A successful initiative you introduced to a team that persisted after your involvement ceased, accompanied by a candid evaluation of the effort required to achieve that.

• Some ease with prompting others to change their workflows and managing the ensuing friction.

• An understanding of which changes necessitate extensive review and which do not, justified by the system's functionality.

• A proven history of developing solutions that are genuinely utilized by your team.

• Capability to articulate how your team collaborates with AI agents.

• Strong product design intuition, user empathy, and a passion for advancing Android UI/UX beyond the basic requirements.

• Self-motivation to enhance the app and codebase beyond the outlined specifications.

• Exceptional communication skills.

• Completion of several technical interviews along with an evaluation on a real codebase.
