This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.
• Take ownership of significant features from inception to launch, collaborating closely with the design team throughout the process.
• Manage, sustain, and enhance reliability metrics for essential features.
• Review pull requests and deliver constructive feedback.
• Assist team members by identifying and resolving technical challenges.
• Standardize and streamline solutions for team-wide implementation.
• Ensure shared components are tested, comprehensible, and reusable.
• Propel enhancements in team processes.
• Minimize manual intervention necessary for successful releases.
• Tackle recurring issues by modifying the underlying configurations.
• Promote early verification by broadening automated checks.
• Conduct planning sessions centered on tasks requiring decisions.
• Establish suitable review levels and approval criteria.
• Engage in discussions with Product, Design, and Engineering, communicating team constraints proactively.
• Manage critical situations, oversee feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA.
• Mentor early-career engineers by offering meaningful tasks and learning opportunities.
• Write, review, and take ownership of code and features directly.
• Collaborate with a globally distributed team focused on developing text-to-speech reading products.
• Over 5 years of software engineering experience, including leadership of a team or ownership of a significant project while remaining hands-on.
• Strong expertise in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit tests.
• Experience in shipping and maintaining background audio or other prolonged background tasks.
• Awareness of the significance of tests and how to effectively write them, including limitations on coverage.
• An example of a change you initiated that was adopted by the team after your involvement ended, along with a candid assessment of what it took to achieve that.
• Some familiarity with the less popular aspects of the role: encouraging colleagues to adapt their workflows and managing the resulting challenges.
• An understanding of which changes warrant extensive review and which do not, justified by system functionality.
• A history of developing tools that your team actively utilized, not just those that enhanced your own efficiency.
• The capability to articulate how your team collaborates with AI agents, beyond personal contributions.
• An instinct for product design, user empathy, and a commitment to advancing Android UI/UX beyond the specifications.
• A self-motivated approach to enhancing the app and codebase beyond the outlined requirements.
• Strong communication abilities.
• Experience in building, maintaining, or contributing to open-source Android projects (bonus).
• Familiarity with iOS, Web, or NodeJS (bonus).
• Completion of multiple technical interviews along with an assessment on a real codebase.
