This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Iowa.
• Take ownership of significant features from inception to deployment, collaborating closely with the design team throughout the process.
• Maintain and enhance reliability metrics for essential features.
• Review pull requests and offer constructive feedback on development.
• Assist team members by troubleshooting technical challenges.
• Identify and streamline reusable solutions within the team.
• Ensure the code remains tested and clearly documented for shared use.
• Drive improvements in team processes.
• Minimize the need for manual interventions during release processes.
• Resolve recurring issues by modifying underlying systems.
• Promote early verification by increasing automated testing measures.
• Conduct planning sessions focused on unresolved decisions.
• Define suitable review levels and sign-off criteria.
• Engage in discussions with Product, Design, and Engineering teams.
• Manage critical issues, oversee feature releases, and provide nightly builds for QA.
• Mentor early-career engineers through learning-oriented tasks and development time.
• Over 5 years of experience in software engineering, including experience leading a team or managing a major project while remaining hands-on.
• Strong expertise in Kotlin, Kotlin Coroutines, Kotlin Flow, Dagger 2, MVVM, Clean Architecture, Background Services, Music Player Service, Android animations, Jetpack Navigation, and JUnit testing.
• Proven experience in shipping and maintaining background audio or other long-running background processes.
• Comprehensive understanding of the significance of testing and strategies for writing effective tests, including limitations.
• An example of a successful initiative you implemented within a team that continued after you stepped back, along with an honest assessment of the effort required to achieve it.
• Comfort with the less popular aspects of the role, such as encouraging changes in team workflows and managing the resulting friction.
• An informed perspective on which changes warrant thorough review and which do not, based on the system's functionality.
• A history of creating tools or solutions that benefited the entire team, not just those that improved your productivity.
• Ability to articulate how your team collaborates with AI agents, beyond your personal contributions.
• Strong product design sense, user empathy, and ambition to enhance Android UI/UX beyond the basic specifications.
• A self-motivated approach to enhancing the app and codebase beyond the outlined specifications.
• Excellent communication abilities.
• Experience in building, maintaining, or contributing to open source Android projects (bonus).
• Familiarity with iOS, Web, or NodeJS (bonus).
