This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead the processes for tax information reporting compliance, which includes Forms 1099 and 1098, along with necessary corrections, reconciliations, documentation, and annual filing obligations.

• Oversee the implementation of backup withholding processes, identifying triggers for withholding, facilitating calculation and remittance workflows, and ensuring compliance controls are maintained.

• Manage the verification of tax IDs, which encompasses collecting W-9 forms, matching TINs, resolving exceptions, and rectifying any invalid or missing taxpayer information.

• Handle the resolution of IRS notices such as B-notices and penalty notifications, address filing discrepancies, and manage correspondence with tax authorities or external advisors.

• Collaborate with teams across Product, Engineering, Data, Operations, Servicing, Legal, Compliance, Finance, and Accounting to translate tax reporting requirements into actionable business, data, systems, and customer support needs.

• Work with Servicing and Operations teams to enhance customer-facing tax workflows, ensure clear communication with customers, manage escalations, and deliver a compliant and efficient customer experience.

• Provide advice on and assist with the implementation of tax infrastructure enhancements that minimize manual processes, enhance data quality, bolster controls, and support automated tax information reporting workflows.

• Assist with indirect tax compliance processes, which may involve filings, reconciliations, registrations, exemption documentation, or business advisory support, based on organizational needs.

• Stay updated on changes in tax information reporting and related compliance requirements, evaluating their impact on Upstart’s processes, systems, controls, and customer-facing workflows.


⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, Business, or equivalent practical experience.

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in tax compliance, tax operations, or tax information reporting.

• Familiarity with Forms 1099 and/or 1098 reporting, including data collection, validation, filing, corrections, and associated documentation.

• Experience with backup withholding, W-9 processes, TIN matching, tax ID verification, and resolution of IRS notices.

• Proven track record of collaborating with cross-functional partners on tax compliance processes, data requirements, systems implementation, customer support workflows, or operational enhancements.
