This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Take ownership of Underdog’s comprehensive tax function and act as the main internal resource for tax-related issues throughout the organization.
• Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local income tax regulations, including collaboration with external preparers, reviewing submissions, and ensuring timely and precise filings.
• Prepare and manage essential in-house filings and reporting, such as state fantasy sports tax submissions, customer tax information reporting, and equity-related tax reports.
• Lead tax information reporting for prediction market clients as requirements and products develop.
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Data teams to create and enhance customer-facing tax capabilities while validating tax calculations and reports.
• Coordinate the annual tax provision process under ASC 740 in conjunction with external tax advisors and auditors.
• Oversee R&D tax credit analysis and document qualifying activities and expenses.
• Investigate and convey tax implications of new products, markets, and business initiatives.
• Develop scalable tax processes, documentation, reconciliations, and internal controls.
• Keep abreast of changes in tax legislation and information-reporting requirements, identifying associated risks, opportunities, and operational impacts.
• Manage relationships with external tax advisors, auditors, and tax authorities.
• A minimum of 5 years of progressive tax experience, preferably encompassing both public accounting and in-house corporate tax roles.
• CPA designation with a robust technical background in federal and state income tax; Big Four experience is highly preferred.
• Knowledge in income tax, industry-specific taxes, and customer information reporting.
• Proven experience in managing outside advisors while remaining directly involved and accountable.
• Proficient in reviewing complex datasets, reconciling tax calculations, and pinpointing data or process discrepancies.
• Ability to collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders on tax-related business and product requirements.
• Capability to convert complex tax regulations into clear operational and technical specifications.
• Ability to function as the sole tax professional, without the support of a large internal team or preset guidelines.
• Detail-oriented and practical, demonstrating sound judgment regarding risk and prioritization.
• Proficient in managing multiple deadlines and conflicting priorities.
• Eagerness to develop systems and enhance processes.
• Experience in a high-growth startup environment or a lean finance team is advantageous.
• Background in fantasy sports, gaming, fintech, financial services, prediction markets, or other regulated industries is a plus.
• Substantial experience with multistate tax and nexus considerations is beneficial.
• Familiarity with high-volume customer or payee information reporting is an advantage.
• Experience collaborating with technical teams to create tax calculations or customer-facing tax solutions is preferred.
• Knowledge of equity compensation tax issues, including ISOs, NSOs, RSUs, Forms 3921, and Section 83(b) elections, is beneficial.
• Awareness of R&D tax credits and relevant documentation is a plus.
• Experience with the implementation of tax software, data workflows, or tax infrastructure is advantageous.
