Substitute Teacher

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan.

📋 Description

• From the comfort of a secure and distraction-free home office, certified Substitute Teachers will provide virtual support for the learning programs of students enrolled in Connections Academy schools nationwide.

• The Substitute Teacher will regularly communicate with students, Learning Coaches, and school staff using the telephone, Internet, and various curriculum tools to ensure the successful completion of each child's instructional program.

• The Michigan Substitute Teacher will serve as the teacher of record at different Connections Academy schools during short- or long-term absences or vacancies, typically lasting between 2 to 20 weeks, with an average assignment duration of 8 to 12 weeks.

• During assignments, the teacher must be accessible online to students, parents, and school staff from Monday to Friday, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm in the school's time zone.

• Regularly communicate with parents, students, and fellow teachers to develop and revise individualized learning plans and schedules, offer feedback on student work, suggest instructional strategies, monitor assignment completion, and confirm student learning.

• Complete grading, generate progress reports, and conduct parent conferences promptly, following school instructions.

• Facilitate the instructional program through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous web conferencing sessions (LiveLessons).

• Assist students and parents with alternative instructional strategies and daily assignments and projects.

• Keep student records and data current, including cumulative files, online student and family information, attendance records, and student logs.

• Collaborate with counselors and special educators to address individual student needs, providing regular updates on student behaviors and classroom activities.

• When not actively assigned, check email regularly to stay informed about upcoming assignments and essential updates from Substitute Services.

• Meet at least once a month with an assigned Substitute Services supervisor via video conferencing software, regardless of assignment status.

• Participate in necessary professional learning tailored to individual needs throughout the year.

• Ensure that all certifications remain active.

⛳️ Requirements

• Substitutes must be highly qualified and possess a valid and active full state teaching certification.

• Having multiple state certifications is advantageous.

• Ability to obtain certification in additional states upon request.

• Capability to secure additional clearances as needed.

• A Bachelor’s degree or higher is required.

• Maintain a dedicated, distraction-free home working environment where all professional activities will take place.

• Availability from Monday to Friday during assigned school hours (typically 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in the school’s time zone) is required for long-term assignments.

• Possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

• Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment that demands significant flexibility, effective task prioritization, self-direction, and creativity.

• Understanding of IEP/504 plans and their implementation in a virtual context.

• Exceptional attention to detail, along with strong time management and organizational capabilities.

• Proven dedication to fostering student achievement.

• Strong technology skills are preferred, including experience with learning management systems, Microsoft Office programs, and Google Apps.

• Reliable, high-speed internet access is essential.

• A computer equipped with Microsoft OS and Microsoft Office is required (PC is preferred).

• A customer-focused approach and a history of being a team player are important.

• Must not provide care for others during standard school hours while on assignment; alternative care arrangements should be made.

• Must not be employed in another position during normal school hours while on assignment.

• Complete mandatory orientation and training programs within 30 days of hire and at the start of each school year.
