Substitute Counselor

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.

📋 Description

• Operating from your secure and focused home office, certified Substitute Counselors will provide virtual support for the learning programs at Connections Academy schools nationwide.

• Engage regularly with students, Learning Coaches, and school staff to ensure that each child successfully completes their educational program.

• Serve as the counselor of record at various Connections Academy schools during short- or long-term absences or vacancies lasting from 2 to 20 weeks, with the average assignment spanning 8 to 12 weeks.

• While on assignment, be accessible online to students, parents, and school personnel Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in the school's time zone to:

• Communicate consistently with parents, students, and educators to develop and update personalized learning plans and schedules, provide feedback on student work, suggest instructional strategies, monitor assignment completion, and verify student learning.

• Review transcripts to determine suitable course placements for students based on school requirements.

• Foster student social-emotional learning through individual and small group sessions.

• Prepare students for their post-graduation pathways.

• Complete grading, generate progress reports, and hold parent conferences promptly as instructed by the school.

• Enhance the instructional program through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous web conferencing sessions (LiveLessons).

• Assist students and parents with alternative instructional strategies and offer support with daily assignments and projects.

• Maintain up-to-date student records and data, including cumulative files, online student and family information, attendance records, and student logs.

• When not actively assigned, regularly check email to stay updated on upcoming assignments and important Substitute Services notifications.

• Meet at least once a month with an assigned Substitute Services supervisor via video conferencing software, whether on or off assignment.

• Engage in required professional learning tailored to individual needs throughout the year.

• Keep certifications active.

⛳️ Requirements

• Counseling substitutes must hold a high level of qualification and be certified as school counselors in Washington.

• Additional state certifications are a bonus.

• Capability to obtain certification in other states upon request.

• Ability to secure additional clearances as needed.

• A Bachelor’s degree or higher is required.

• Must maintain a dedicated, distraction-free home working environment where all business activities will take place.

• During assignments, availability is required Monday through Friday during designated school hours (generally 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in the school’s time zone).

• Exceptional written and oral communication skills.

• Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment that demands significant flexibility, effective task prioritization, self-direction, and creativity.

• Knowledge of IEP/504 plans and their implementation in a virtual context.

• Excellent attention to detail, along with strong time management and organizational abilities.

• Demonstrated commitment to student success.

• Strong technological proficiency (experience with learning management systems, Microsoft Office, and Google Apps is preferred).

• Reliable, high-speed internet connection is essential.

• A computer equipped with Microsoft OS and Microsoft Office is required (PC is preferred).

• A customer-focused approach and a history of being a team player.

• Must not provide care for others during regular school hours while on assignment; alternative care arrangements should be in place.

• Cannot hold another job during regular school hours while on assignment.

• Required to complete orientation and training programs within 30 days of hire, and at the beginning of each academic year.
