Staff Software Engineer, Platform Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of the technical direction for a domain that spans multiple teams over a multi-year timeframe.

• Elevate the skill levels of engineers throughout the organization via design and architecture reviews, collaborative coding, and educational documentation.

• Achieve significant initiatives by nurturing the engineers responsible for their development.

• Tackle cross-team challenges that lack a single team’s ownership, including unresolved issues.

• Create design documents and technical standards utilized by other teams.

• Act as the domain expert for the company and make your expertise accessible to others.

• Build prototypes to answer unresolved questions with evidence.

• Write and review code, troubleshoot production issues, and be on-call for systems you manage.

• Identify and resolve technical factors contributing to organizational delays.

• Collaborate with engineering managers and product teams on planning, sequencing tasks, and halting work when necessary.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 10 years of professional software engineering experience, with several years at a senior level or higher.

• Profound expertise in at least one area such as distributed systems, databases and storage, networking, data engineering, or applied AI systems.

• Proven record of technical influence that extends beyond your own team, achieving results reliant on individuals you did not directly manage.

• Experience in coaching engineers on an organizational scale.

• Demonstrated multi-year technical judgment and lasting impact of your technical direction.

• Exceptional written communication skills and proficiency in crafting design documents.

• Experience managing production systems, encompassing operations, on-call duties, and incident response.

• A customer-focused mindset and the discipline to ensure that designs enhance user experience.

• Ability to navigate ambiguity and the discernment to decide when something should not be constructed.

• Experience at a rapidly growing company where architecture evolved alongside growth (preferred).

• Familiarity with high-volume data pipelines, streaming systems, or telemetry and time-series data (preferred).

• Experience deploying machine learning or LLM systems in a production environment (preferred).

• Background in working closely with physical infrastructure and hardware failure considerations (preferred).

• Contributions to open-source projects, published works, or presentations in your field (preferred).

• Must have authorization to work in the United States.
