Staff Software Engineer, Bazel, Go

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +17 more states.

📋 Description

• Oversee the technical strategy for Instacart's Bazel build system, which encompasses remote caching, remote build execution (RBE), build performance, and the user experience for developers working with the build.

• Steer the technical strategy for our Go platform, including frameworks, standard libraries, service scaffolding, and design patterns that Go engineers across Instacart rely on.

• Design and implement multi-quarter initiatives aimed at significantly enhancing build times, CI reliability, and the local development experience for engineers utilizing Bazel and Go.

• Take ownership of the developer experience metrics for the systems you manage, define what constitutes "good" performance, track it, and leverage the data to prioritize investments.

• Collaborate with infrastructure, platform, and product engineering teams to implement changes to the build system and Go platform with minimal disruption.

• Establish the technical standards for the systems you oversee in terms of reliability, performance, upgrade frequency, and developer ergonomics.

• Mentor engineers both within the team and the broader engineering organization; foster the development of a community of Bazel and Go experts at Instacart.

• Represent the team in cross-organizational technical discussions regarding build, CI/CD, and backend platform directions.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 10 years of experience in software development.

• Extensive, hands-on knowledge of Bazel, including remote caching, remote build execution (RBE), and performance optimization of large build graphs.

• Significant production experience in writing and managing Go services at scale, with insights on structuring large Go codebases (frameworks, dependency management, testing patterns, shared libraries).

• Proven history of leading cross-team technical initiatives that have a measurable impact on developer velocity, build performance, or CI reliability.

• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS) and distributed systems.

• Strong technical leadership skills, capable of driving strategy, mentoring engineers, and influencing outcomes without direct authority.
