Staff Quality Engineer – Exploratory Test Lead

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Collaborate closely with Labs/R&D during the invention and specification phases to model products, assess risks, and raise inquiries prior to coding.

• Develop and implement chartered, time-bound exploratory testing sessions, and lead structured debriefing discussions.

• Examine critical failure modes that involve multi-tenant isolation, configuration interactions, concurrency, lifecycle transitions, integration timing, observability, and long-term policy behavior.

• Utilize the Heuristic Test Strategy Model to model risk and maintain an ongoing risk catalogue.

• Document bugs, risks, queries about intent, and challenges encountered during testing.

• Sustain coverage and testability maps.

• Advocate for bugs and drive significant findings towards resolution.

• Collaborate with Product, Labs, and Engineering teams in Example Mapping and Specification-by-Example workshops.

• Analyze and promote system testability, observability, controllability, and reliable test oracles.

• Detect gaps in automated checks and direct enhancements to automation and specification-test backlogs.

• Create tools for data generation, state manipulation, comparisons, log and trace mining, high-volume testing, and oracle construction.

• Explore AI-generated code, tests, and agentic workflow outputs.

• Assist teams in accurately interpreting dashboards and automated-check results.

• Mentor Quality Engineers, SDETs, engineers, and product managers.

• Generate the testing narrative that supports release and the transition decisions from Labs to Engineering.

• Provide evidence and risk narratives for release readiness, promotion gates, rollback validation, and canary strategy.

• Offer failure hypotheses to performance, resilience, accessibility, security, and chaos-testing initiatives.

• Enhance testing records for regulatory and auditing purposes and escalate compliance findings.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of proven experience with progressively increasing responsibilities in software testing and test automation.

• A strong testing practice focused on product investigation rather than mere verification.

• Proficiency in modeling, model-based coverage, oracles, heuristics, chartering, note-taking, test framing, safety language, and bug advocacy.

• Rapid Software Testing, BBST, or similar foundational training is appreciated but not mandatory.

• Strong risk-analysis skills to create plausible, specific, and defensible failure narratives.

• Experience with decision logic and configuration-driven behaviors, including rules engines, eligibility or underwriting logic, pricing or calculation engines, and variations in multi-tenant configurations.

• A history of identifying issues overlooked by green automated suites and articulating the investigation process.

• Experience in building an organizational testing capability as a consultant, coach, or practice leader.

• Outstanding written communication skills for interaction with engineers, executives, auditors, and regulators.

• Ability to influence without formal authority and deliver challenging findings constructively.

• Familiarity with agentic AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Copilot.

• Must be located in the contiguous 48 United States.

• Must address U.S. employment eligibility and visa sponsorship requirements.
