Staff Engineer, Backend

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Develop and enhance backend systems and services that are highly scalable and reliable.

• Oversee the architecture for intricate backend projects that involve multiple teams.

• Create APIs, data models, event-driven workflows, and define service boundaries.

• Construct systems capable of managing high-throughput requests and extensive datasets.

• Design asynchronous processes utilizing queues, events, streams, and background workers.

• Make architectural choices concerning relational databases, NoSQL databases, search systems, caching, and messaging frameworks.

• Detect and address performance bottlenecks within applications, databases, queues, and overall infrastructure.

• Enhance API latency, throughput, resource utilization, and system scalability.

• Design systems that ensure graceful degradation, retries, idempotency, failure recovery, and fault tolerance.

• Establish data consistency patterns and manage distributed workflows across services.

• Spearhead optimization initiatives for databases and data access.

• Develop strategies for caching, indexing, partitioning, sharding, and data retention.

• Boost observability through metrics, logs, tracing, dashboards, and actionable alerts.

• Lead the investigation of intricate production incidents and implement permanent corrective actions.

• Set engineering standards related to reliability, scalability, testing, security, and maintainability.

• Review architectural proposals and significant code modifications across teams.

• Identify systemic technical debt and promote practical modernization initiatives.

• Collaborate with Product and Engineering leadership on technical trade-offs aligned with business needs.

• Mentor senior engineers and foster enhanced technical ownership throughout teams.

• Stay engaged in coding and contribute to critical systems and projects.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 8 years in software engineering, with considerable experience in constructing scalable backend systems.

• Strong expertise in at least one backend programming language, such as Node.js/TypeScript, Go, Java, or similar.

• In-depth knowledge of distributed systems and microservices architecture.

• Profound understanding of API design and communication between services.

• Strong familiarity with relational and NoSQL database systems.

• Experience in designing systems with large datasets and substantial request volumes.

• Solid understanding of concurrency, asynchronous processing, queues, and event-driven architectures.

• Experience with caching and distributed caching methodologies.

• Strong grasp of database indexing, query optimization, transactions, and data consistency principles.

• Experience in designing dependable systems featuring retries, idempotency, timeouts, rate limiting, and failure recovery.

• Comprehensive understanding of scalability, availability, consistency, and performance trade-offs.

• Proven ability to diagnose complex production issues through metrics, logs, and distributed tracing.

• Excellent system design and architectural decision-making capabilities.

• Demonstrated ability to lead technically challenging projects that involve multiple engineers or teams.
