Staff Compiler Performance Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Establish the performance strategy for Falcon by pinpointing major opportunities across benchmarks and customer workloads, translating them into a technical roadmap.

• Spearhead the design of intricate, overarching optimizations within the optimizer and code generator, as well as the interfaces connecting the compiler, runtime, and garbage collector.

• Make key architectural choices regarding the Falcon optimization pipeline, compile time budget, and tiering strategy.

• Drive the enablement of Falcon on new hardware platforms and emerging Azul products.

• Provide mentorship to senior engineers, evaluate critical designs and code, and establish standards for performance methodology and validation.

• Serve as Azul's representative within the LLVM community, leading upstream design discussions and contributions that enhance managed language compilers.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of professional experience in developing optimizing compilers or JIT compilers.

• Proven track record of technical leadership, including ownership of the design of key compiler components or optimization frameworks utilized in production.

• Proficient in C++ with extensive experience in large, long-term codebases.

• In-depth knowledge of compiler optimization and code generation, with a clear understanding of the trade-offs between peak performance, compile time, warmup, and code size.

• Advanced performance analysis skills down to the microarchitecture level.

• Acknowledged contributions to LLVM or other significant compilers, including being a code owner, maintainer, or author of notable upstream work (preferred).

• Extensive experience with JIT compilers for managed languages such as HotSpot C2, Graal, V8, .NET RyuJIT, or similar (preferred).

• Experience collaborating closely with runtime and GC teams on speculation, deoptimization, and barrier design (preferred).
