Staff Backend Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Identify and implement enhancements to the codebase that facilitate faster and safer deployment for both humans and AI agents.

• Collaborate with a team of senior engineers in an environment that values trust and autonomy with minimal processes.

• Lead decisions and build consensus asynchronously through comprehensive documentation and specifications.

• Take ownership of features from start to finish — spanning backend systems to partner-facing interfaces.

• Design scalable solutions and foundational patterns that enable us to efficiently introduce new partner experiences.

• Partner directly with PMs and business collaborators to outline and refine our strategic roadmap.

• A natural inclination to boldly engage with unfamiliar codebases and deliver swift results.

• Strong product-oriented mindset — your understanding of quality and architecture is rooted in enhancing customer experience rather than pursuing technical elegance for its own sake.

• Capability to direct AI agents and automated workflows to construct and sustain intricate systems, along with the insight to discern when to intervene and when to allow them to function autonomously.

• Proven experience in designing the guardrails and feedback mechanisms that ensure productive and reliable AI-assisted development.

• Familiarity with, or a strong willingness to master, distributed system development using Scala.

• The competence to explain not only how you would tackle a problem, but also why, including the trade-offs you are prepared to accept.
