Staff Backend Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Design, construct, and enhance backend APIs, services, event-driven workflows, queues, background jobs, data models, caching strategies, and integrations that cater to millions of users and thousands of sports organizations.

• Take ownership of intricate backend product and technical tasks from initial discovery to design, implementation, rollout, production support, and ensuring long-term maintainability.

• Navigate ambiguous technical projects by deconstructing problems, identifying risks, making practical trade-offs, and guiding teams from uncertainty to clear execution.

• Enhance the reliability, scalability, performance, and operability of production systems through thoughtful architecture, robust testing practices, database optimization, caching, monitoring, alerting, and incident management.

• Troubleshoot complex production challenges by analyzing application code, databases, caches, queues, jobs, observability data, and the overall request lifecycle.

• Collaborate with Product, Design, Engineering, Infrastructure, Platform, Data, Support, and other teams to translate roadmap requirements into sustainable backend systems and actionable delivery plans.

• Possess strong interpersonal skills to provide and receive constructive feedback, mentor engineers, influence cross-team alignment, and clearly communicate technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience in backend engineering at a staff level, with a proven history of building and operating high-scale APIs, services, distributed systems, or shared product capabilities in production environments.

• Strong proficiency in backend technologies such as Node, TypeScript, Elixir, Ruby/Rails, Java, Go, Python, or similar languages, including understanding runtime behavior, failure modes, and production trade-offs.

• Solid SQL and relational database expertise, covering indexing, query optimization, migrations, profiling, data modeling, transactions, read and write patterns, and performance tuning.

• Practical knowledge of service-oriented architecture, event-driven architecture, queues, background jobs, webhooks, Redis or similar caching solutions, and systems that must scale under real production conditions.

• Familiarity with production infrastructure and platform issues, enabling effective reasoning through deployments, containers, CI/CD pipelines, cloud services, basic networking, observability, and operational debugging.

• Strong production ownership mindset, capable of utilizing logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, alerts, incident reviews, and system behavior to enhance reliability over time.

• Proven ability to lead through influence, mentor engineers, facilitate technical decisions, communicate trade-offs effectively, and relate backend technical choices to customer impact, business requirements, and long-term maintainability.
