Managing Engineer, Database & Platform

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.

📋 Description

• Oversee, mentor, and develop a team of Database Administrators / Platform Engineers, encompassing hiring, performance evaluations, career growth, and coaching.

• Take ownership of the technical roadmap for database platform services, which includes MySQL, Redis, MongoDB on-premises, and MongoDB Atlas.

• Lead the processes of installation, configuration, upgrades, automation, backup/restore, patching, capacity planning, and production runbooks.

• Design and execute database architecture and operational patterns, such as sharding, replication, high availability, disaster recovery, backup retention, and failover strategies.

• Develop and enhance CI/CD and automation pipelines for database provisioning, schema modifications, migrations, and configuration management.

• Collaborate with product engineering, SRE, security, and cloud teams to establish SLAs/SLOs, incident response protocols, root cause analysis, and risk mitigation strategies.

• Set up monitoring, alerting, and observability systems for database health and performance.

• Promote proactive measures to prevent incidents.

• Define and uphold standards, best practices, and governance for database access, security, backups, and compliance.

• Engage in design reviews, capacity planning, and product inception to convert feature requirements into scalable data solutions.

• Facilitate post-incident reviews and continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing mean time to detect and recover.

• Represent the database platform in cross-functional initiatives and influence decisions regarding long-term architecture.

• Directly manage a team of 4–10 Database Administrators / Platform Engineers.

• Work alongside hiring managers and senior leadership on resource allocation and budget priorities.

⛳️ Requirements

• 7+ years of overall experience in database administration, data platform engineering, or similar roles.

• 3+ years in a managerial or technical leadership role.

• Demonstrated experience managing production deployments in both on-premises and cloud environments.

• Strong understanding of database internals, replication, sharding, performance optimization, and backup/restore methods.

• Experience with automation and orchestration tools.

• Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and tools for schema migrations and platform modifications.

• Robust incident management experience with the capability to lead technical incident responses.

• Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with vendors, product teams, SRE, security, and engineering leadership.

• Preferred: experience with managed database services, including MongoDB Atlas, Amazon RDS, Aurora, Azure, and ElastiCache.

• Preferred: knowledge of observability stacks and log aggregation.

• Preferred: understanding of data-store security and compliance controls, including encryption, IAM, and auditing practices.

• Preferred: experience with large-scale data migrations and cross-region replication.

• Preferred: relevant certifications such as MongoDB Certified DBA or AWS/Azure/GCP certifications.

• Direct management responsibility for 4–10 Database Administrators / Platform Engineers.

• Accountable for staffing, performance management, career development, and establishing team goals and KPIs.

• Must undergo a background investigation.
