
Senior/Staff Machine Learning Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Europe.
• Design, develop, and refine machine learning models and systems based on LLM that facilitate essential decisions in areas such as fraud detection, compliance, growth, and operations.
• Work with complex, real-world data to pinpoint signals, create features, and consistently enhance model performance.
• Balance practical considerations among model performance, interpretability, and operational costs.
• Collaborate closely with product and operations teams to identify and address issues that significantly affect the experience of hundreds of thousands of clients.
• Contribute to backend systems and data pipelines that enable model training and inference (while not primarily focusing on infrastructure).
• Write high-quality, thoroughly tested code and engage in code reviews.
• Assume long-term ownership of vital systems as River expands.
• Over 4 years of experience in developing and implementing machine learning models in practical environments, or equivalent research experience.
• Strong understanding of ML concepts and their practical applications, including tradeoffs.
• Experience addressing challenges related to noisy, imbalanced, or real-world data.
• Demonstrated ownership of systems and comfort in resolving ambiguous problems.
• Excellent judgment regarding correctness, reliability, and operational risk.
• Ability to bridge the gap between technical systems and business/product requirements.
