This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Minnesota.
• Provides underwriting recommendations and makes decisions to safeguard the financial resources of both the company and the carrier.
• Assesses proposal requests to evaluate, categorize, and rate each risk, determining acceptability, coverage, and pricing.
• Establishes and nurtures relationships with producers.
• Operates with expanded underwriting authority and responsibilities in business development.
• Achieves annual company objectives related to profitability, renewal retention, revenue growth, new business production, and customer service standards.
• Evaluates risk acceptability within set guidelines and establishes suitable rates and factor levels.
• Analyzes proposed plan modifications for acceptability and cost implications.
• Collaborates with the Sales department to follow up on quoted cases.
• Engages with third-party administrators, brokers, and other external stakeholders to develop strategies, address inquiries, clarify decisions, manage issues, build and maintain productive relationships, and respond promptly to service requests.
• Works in partnership with management, internal departments, and other relevant parties to meet customer demands and deliver outstanding customer experiences.
• Timely completes requests for proposals (RFPs) and follows up for status and competitive insights.
• Trains and mentors Underwriters and other assigned internal and external personnel.
• Willingness to travel for business development and growth opportunities as needed.
• Demonstrates the ability to effectively participate in and complete assigned projects and other activities.
• Shows eagerness and capability to engage in leadership and growth programs when assigned or nominated.
• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, a related field, or equivalent education and/or experience.
• Prefer pursuit of Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI), or Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) certification(s).
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant and progressive professional experience.
• Proven expertise, knowledge, and proficiency in Medical Stop Loss Underwriting.
• Exhibits strategic thinking, foresight, proactivity, and relationship-building skills.
• Capable of reading and interpreting documents such as benefit plans, bid specifications, claim reports, and procedural manuals.
• Possesses and applies knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures effectively.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, emphasizing confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy.
• Excellent critical thinking and negotiating abilities.
• Advanced organizational and analytical skills; proven ability to manage multiple tasks effectively under time constraints.
• Knowledgeable about the insurance industry and the company's business operations.
• Intermediate proficiency and experience with the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Teams, etc.).
• Strong collaboration skills with the ability to thrive in a highly team-oriented environment.
• Adaptable and eager to learn.
• Solid organizational skills.
• Preferred: prior knowledge and experience with Young Consulting’s ESLOffice or similar systems.
• Preferred: basic understanding of medical terminology.
