This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Illinois.
• Take ownership of the entire civil scope from initial proposal concepts through to detailed design, construction, project closeout, and delivery of documentation.
• Assist with HVDC, high-voltage substation, and FACTS projects.
• Oversee subcontracted civil and structural design tasks, including the design of industrial multi-story steel buildings.
• Provide support for conceptual designs, cost estimates, and tender documentation related to civil scope.
• Determine contracting strategies and create competitive pricing for civil design and construction.
• Develop technical scopes of work, delineate responsibility divisions, schedules, and estimates for construction costs.
• Evaluate subcontractors and consortium partners in the context of sourcing negotiations.
• Ensure civil design concepts meet customer requirements, permitting standards, and local regulations.
• Coordinate feedback from constructability reviews and optimize designs accordingly.
• Manage the civil construction scope and liaise with civil subcontractors and consortium partners.
• Track and document any changes to scope, schedules, and budgets.
• Issue subcontracts with support from EHS, Quality, Planning, Contract Management, and Sourcing.
• Incorporate customer EHS requirements into project-specific procedures.
• Manage risks, opportunities, cost deviations, and overruns related to civil design and construction.
• Lead the structural design team, ensuring timely preparation of specifications, designs, BOQs, material lists, and site work data.
• Monitor and transmit project documentation via designated document-management systems.
• Mentor, coach, and develop team members.
• Exhibit EHS leadership, enforce the STOP WORK POLICY, engage in Gemba walks, and spearhead EHS improvement initiatives.
• Address non-conformances and adhere to quality procedures.
• Track engineering and business KPIs.
• Support site procedures and deliver engineering field support to fulfill customer and GE GSI standards.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Professional Engineering License (PE) in the United States in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering, procurement, and construction of large-capital high-voltage substations, FACTS, and HVDC projects from a civil engineering viewpoint.
• Familiarity with substation design principles and their influence on civil and structural designs.
• Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time, with occasional international travel.
• Compliance with GE travel policies.
• Experience in structural design for steel and concrete buildings, non-building structures, electrical substations, equipment support structures, and both deep and shallow foundations.
• Strong knowledge of IBC, IEBC, ASCE, IEEE, ACI, and AISC design codes.
• Understanding of architectural, electrical, and mechanical design requisites.
• Proficient in Bentley STAAD.Pro, RISA, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Bluebeam, MathCAD or TEDDS, and MS Excel.
• Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
• Experience supervising and managing civil design and construction subcontractors.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
