Senior Staff Software Engineer, Payments

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Define and drive the multi-quarter technical strategy for Payments, encompassing rails, orchestration, and transfers to support the launch of new products, entry into new geographies, and significant increases in payment volume.

• Design and enhance the core Payments platform (including rails integrations, routing, and funds-flow services) to ensure high availability, low latency, and cost efficiency at a global level.

• Lead the comprehensive design and implementation of large-scale, cross-team initiatives (for example, new global rails, decomp/migrations, and resiliency programs), translating high ambiguity into clear milestones and measurable outcomes.

• Establish and uphold technical standards for financial accuracy across Payments, covering idempotency, reconciliation, failure-mode management, and auditability for all monetary movement pathways.

• Collaborate closely with FinHub, Payments Risk, Regulatory Platform, and Product to develop cohesive architectures that balance customer experience, risk management, compliance, and unit economics.

• Offer extensive technical mentorship to senior and staff engineers across Payments pods, enhancing the quality of system design, review processes, and long-term maintainability.

• Utilize data and observability signals (such as success rates, latency, costs, and incident patterns) to identify structural gaps in the platform and lead systematic improvements in reliability and efficiency.

• Represent Payments in executive and cross-organizational forums, effectively communicating trade-offs, aligning stakeholders with strategy, and securing support for high-impact technical initiatives.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in building and operating large-scale distributed systems in production environments.

• Extensive experience in money-movement architecture (including PSPs, ISO 20022, routing, double-entry, and high-volume payment systems).

• In-depth knowledge of backend programming (such as Python, Go, Java) and cloud-native architecture.

• Proven history of designing systems that are highly available and perform at a high level.

• Ability to foresee scaling bottlenecks before they arise and take proactive, decisive measures.

• Experience leading cross-functional technical initiatives and mentoring senior engineers.

• Dedication to technical excellence, sharing best practices, and cultivating a robust engineering culture.

• Skill in simplifying complex technical concepts into clear and actionable solutions.
